Role Summary

We’re seeking a

Fractional CFO/Controller

with deep expertise in the construction industry, and who knows how to spell WIP, to guide multiple client engagements. You will own financial planning and analysis, oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, and elevate reporting and controls—while advising founders and CEOs on strategy, risk, and capital. This is a remote, client‑facing role ideal for an experienced fractional leader who enjoys working on a portfolio and making an impact.

What You’ll Do

Strategic Finance & Leadership

Partner with owners/CEOs to define financial strategy, growth plans, and KPIs aligned to backlog, margin health, and cash conversion.

Lead monthly/quarterly business reviews; translate insights into clear actions for field, ops, and leadership teams.

Implement and refine job costing ,

WIP schedules ,

percent‑of‑completion revenue recognition (ASC 606) , retainage, and change‑order controls.

Strengthen

AIA/progress billing , lien waivers, certified payroll/union compliance, and subcontractor/vendor management processes.

Drive a timely month‑end close, maintain balance‑sheet integrity, and ensure audit readiness.

Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

Build rolling forecasts across revenue, gross margin, overhead, and project cash flow; model scenarios for backlog, labor capacity, and material price volatility.

Establish project‑level and company‑level dashboards for margin fade, productivity, and schedule risk.

Cash, Capital & Risk

Manage cash flow forecasting, AR collections, and vendor terms; optimize working capital and bonding capacity.

Support debt/equity financing, as well as banking relationships; liaise with surety partners and insurance brokers.

Enhance internal controls, contract compliance, and risk mitigation across projects and entities.

M&A & Corporate Development (as applicable)

Lead buy‑side diligence (quality of earnings, WIP integrity, backlog quality), deal modeling, and integration of accounting/ERP processes.

People, Process & Systems

Mentor accounting teams; supervise third‑party providers (payroll, tax, benefits).

Select, implement, or tune

QuickBooks ,

Sage Intacct ,

NetSuite , and construction add‑ons (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend, Viewpoint).

Document SOPs; modernize transaction flows, close cadence, and reporting packages.

What Success Looks Like (First 90–180 Days)

Accurate, timely

WIP

and margin reporting with clear variance narratives.

A reliable

13‑week cash forecast

and improved DSO/DPO.

Tightened change‑order discipline and reduced margin fade.

A monthly close at ≤5 business days with clean reconciliations.

Executive dashboards that connect field performance to financial outcomes.

Ideal Profile

Current

Fractional CFO/Controller

successfully managing multiple clients and eager to expand through C‑Suite Support’s pipeline.

Builder mindset: sets ambitious goals, executes independently, and influences without authority.

Relationship‑driven advisor who communicates complex finance in plain English to field leaders and executives.

Entrepreneurial, impact‑oriented, and comfortable in fast‑moving, founder‑led environments.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s in Finance, Accounting, or related field;

CPA and/or Master’s

preferred.

Significant progressive experience as a

CFO, VP Finance, or Controller

within

construction (GC, specialty trades, civil, EPC, or development) .

Mastery of

job costing, WIP/POC revenue , AIA billing, retainage, and construction compliance.

Strong

financial modeling/Excel ; adept at building driver‑based forecasts and scenario analyses.

Hands‑on systems experience with

QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct , and construction ERPs/integrations.

Excellent written and verbal communication; proven partner to CEOs, boards, lenders, and sureties.

Comfortable leading remote teams and working across time zones; able to context‑switch across clients.

M&A experience

(diligence, integration) a plus. Multi‑industry exposure is helpful.

Engagement & Logistics

Contract / Fractional : part‑time portfolio engagements; hours and scope vary by client.

Remote‑first

with occasional on‑site visits as needed (kickoffs, audits, lender/surety meetings).

Competitive hourly or retainer arrangements commensurate with experience and scope.
