Technician II (Job #305) – Columbia, MD
Position Summary Technician Level II must have a solid technical background and is responsible for running projects in the absence of a Crew Leader.
Position Responsibilities
Assists with fiber optic and copper cable installations.
Under supervision, installs fiber optic and copper cable systems, supporting structures, and components.
Assists the Crew Leader in the successful completion of assigned tasks.
Facilitates hands‑on instruction of lesser‑experienced Technicians.
Essential Skills and Experience Minimum 2 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Able to work independently or as a member of a crew to complete fiber optic, UTP, and/or coaxial cable installation projects as well as associated system components.
Hands‑on experience installing vertical backbone and horizontal fiber optic and copper cable systems; proficiency with hand tools for installation of support structures (conduit, cable trays, racks, patch panels, etc.).
Experience with testing and documenting results using test equipment such as light source, power meters, OTDRs, and hand‑held cable testers per TIA/EIA TSB‑67.
Knowledge of fiber optic and copper cable terms, installation codes, BICSI, EIA/TIA standards, manufacturer recommendations, and OSHA standards.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to work in premise and OSP environments, including ladders, lifts, manholes, confined spaces, bucket trucks up to 30′.
Availability for overtime, after hours, travel, and 24/7 on‑call service as required. Prefer experience with 2″ and under conduit.
Must pass a background check and/or obtain a government‑issued security clearance. Clean driving record required (DMV record upon offer). Drug screening required. U.S. citizenship may also be required.
Education High school diploma/GED, military electronic specialization schools, or trade school certification. Manufacturer certification, as applicable, may be substituted. BICSI certification is a plus.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Technicians will frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, pull, push, use hands to handle or feel objects, reach with arms, talk and hear. Vision requirements include close, distant, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Noise level typically moderate, may become heavy depending on equipment. Technicians will also frequently lift a minimum of 75 lbs or more.
