PT Library Assistant Youth Services JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this classification is to support the Library's Youth programs and services to children and teens birth through age 17. This position provides general assistance within the Youth Services area to parents, teachers, caregivers and other adults regarding collections, resources, and programs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs high-quality customer service functions in person, via telephone, email, and web chat; provides assistance and information related to library services, fees, procedures, programs or other issues; directs visitors to areas of the library. Provides collection information to patrons; assists patrons in locating library materials, in using computer catalog, Internet and other digital library resources and technology. Participates in indoor and outdoor outreach events to promote library services and provide program support. Assists other Youth Services staff in keeping the Youth Services department collection and all areas of the department in order, including, but not limited to, shelving materials and shelf-reading. Assists with processing library materials, including covering, labeling, and stamping. Assists with material donations for the department. Performs general tasks related to library operations, which may include opening/closing library, turning equipment on/off, or monitoring/straightening/cleaning public library areas. Supports programs with room setup and cleanup, as well as material preparation for classes and crafts, games, and events. Creates flyers, brochures, and displays for programs and to promote library programs and services under the direction of the Youth Librarian. Assists in the training and supervising of student volunteers.

Ensures patrons comply with all applicable rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.

Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, volunteers, library patrons, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Operates a personal computer, handheld devices, general office, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of library apps, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Ability to work scheduled hours, which include evenings and some Saturdays. Performs other related duties as required, assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:

High school education or GED is required.

One (1) year of experience in library or customer service work. Licenses or Certifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of library procedures. Knowledge of customer service principles. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs and applications. Knowledge of policy research, analysis, and composition. Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing. Skill in the use of computers for data entry, word processing, presentations. Skill in the use of small office equipment, including but not limited to: printers/copy machines or desk phones. Ability to build rapport. Ability to listen. Ability to multi-task. Ability to take direction and execute assignments in a timely manner. Ability to work semi-independently, work well with others, and manage time effectively. Ability to establish and maintain general working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to bend, crouch, twist, reach, and crawl.
