Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories (WDL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health network, which is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin supporting a shared mission of patient care, innovation, medical research and education. Location: US:WI:MILWAUKEE at our WI DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORIES facility.
FTE: 1.0 (Full-Time). Positions with an "FTE" (full time equivalency) of .8 - 1.0 are eligible for full-time medical, dental and vision benefits. Positions with an "FTE" of .5 - .799 are eligible for part-time pro-rated medical, dental and vision benefits.
Standard Hours: 40.00
Shift: 1st shift (6:45am - 3:15pm; Weekend & Holiday Rotations Required)
Summary Performs waived, moderate complexity, and high complexity testing on patient specimens. Correlates and interprets data utilizing critical thinking skills and knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments. Involved in teaching and training students, new employees, and residents/medical students. Effectively performs problem resolution, equipment maintenance, reagent preparation, and test result data entry. Successfully and timely completes all required competency assessments.
Responsibilities
Consistently performs all assigned testing accurately and efficiently. Acquires, maintains, and utilizes thorough knowledge of principles and theories to effectively perform testing and to respond to inquiries regarding testing. Keeps abreast of changes and updates technical procedures.
Consistently follows established protocols for interpreting and verifying test results. Recognizes abnormal or inconsistent results and investigates appropriately and timely. Notifies leadership of potential problems immediately to avoid compromising patient care.
Consistently completes work assignments in a timely manner by prioritizing and multi-tasking as appropriate. Adjusts to fluctuating workloads, positively cooperating in situations where additional work is required. Maintains workstation in a clean and organized manner.
Works independently and as a member of a cohesive team to ensure all work within the department is completed timely and accurately. Takes the initiative to “pitch in” where needed. Consistently communicates possible delays, issues, or potential problems to leadership. If workload permits, voluntarily completes extra projects, duties, or studies, as coordinated by leadership.
Consistently and accurately performs required quality control procedures and documents results as specified by each procedure. Performs corrective action as appropriate. Documents out-of-control situations, providing details of the situation and results of the corrective action taken. Notifies leadership of out-of-control, discrepant, or unexpected results.
Follows specific procedures to correctly operate instrumentation. Performs and documents required instrument maintenance as specified. Performs basic troubleshooting including contacting technical support when appropriate. Communicates with peers regarding instrument and equipment problems and notifies leadership in a timely manner. Documents instrument problems, providing details of the situation and results of the corrective action taken.
Actively participates in student, new employee, medical student, and resident training as needed. Covers training materials thoroughly and provides information regarding the principles and theories of the technical procedures. Participates in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
Recognizes and investigates problems thoroughly and takes corrective action as necessary. Involves peers if appropriate. For problems and issues that cannot be effectively resolved, notifies test system primary operator or resource in a timely manner.
Successfully completes all competency assessments required. Follows required performance improvement plans as needed. Effectively performs all work within defined error limits.
Qualifications
MLT or MLS
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (formerly Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology), or a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry (other advanced science degrees may also be acceptable) with a minimum of one year direct clinical laboratory experience in the specific discipline of employment.
ASCP or AMT certification within 12 months of date of hire or date of promotion into certification-eligible position. Should additional time be required for training, the leader is to consult with Human Resources and an additional six (6) months may be granted if approved and an agreement is in place.
Non-Certified Technologist: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in one of the following: Clinical Laboratory Science (formerly Medical Technology), Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry (other advanced science degrees may also be acceptable). Effective January 1, 2012, as provided for by the ASCP Board of Registry Certification guidelines, four-year college degreed individuals may be hired into non-certified Technologist positions, without prior clinical laboratory experience. Typically, employees in this job classification spend 12 months (2080 hours full time employees) in on-the-job training with the target goal of the training to be completed within the 12 month period. After all ASCP on-the-job training requirements are fulfilled, the employee becomes eligible for and is expected to take the applicable ASCP certification examination. Exceptions to this timeframe may occur with the mutual agreement of the manager, Human Resources, and the Union (as applicable).
