HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN OR TECHNOLOGIST, WDL; FULL TIME - 1ST SHIFT
Location: Milwaukee, WI (WI Diagnostic Laboratories facility)

Shift: 1st shift (2:00 am -- 10:30 am; Monday - Friday)
Summary
Performs routine and special procedures on patients’ tissue specimens in preparation for pathological examination, including advanced skills, special stains.
Responsibilities
Consistently receives, accepts and recognizes specimens and requests that arrive in the lab. Assures proper identification and specimen transport condition. Maintains specimen identification throughout entire process. Recognizes STAT specimens and follows proper handling procedures.
Maintains accuracy when accessioning specimens, making cassettes, and assigning cases. Handles special testing requests (frozen, lymphoma workups, etc.) according to protocol, including decal and processing for bone marrows.
Understands processing protocols and sets up tissue to be processed accordingly. Demonstrates working knowledge of the Peloris and VIP processors and can perform daily maintenance and troubleshooting.
Recognizes adequacy of processing and identifies/corrects problems that may result in inadequately processed tissue. Determines mold size, identifies/orients specimens using embedding techniques. Identifies/corrects labeling or accession errors. Embeds an adequate number of blocks and maintains paraffin supply; keeps area clean.
Operates and maintains the microtome; ensures acceptable sections and slides. Troubleshoots issues to produce adequate slides and blocks within departmental standards.
Selects stains and reagents for routine staining. Prepares stains and solutions. Uses appropriate controls and determines acceptable staining. Maintains stainers and coverslippers with troubleshooting knowledge.
Uses Cerner for case assembly, resolves discrepancies before slide distribution, verifies staining quality and case status in Cerner.
Pulls recut/pending worklists in Cerner to verify orders; manages slides/blocks from slide room or histology.
Maintains/serves laboratory instruments per protocols; monitors QA/QC and documents performance; identifies malfunctions and repair needs.
Operates a cryostat with proper settings; ensures accurate block orientation and labeling; produces acceptable slides within timeframes; cleans and maintains cryostat and staining area.
Adheres to histology policies and local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
Completes competency assessments; maintains documentation of competency and improvement plans.
Performs workups of IHC antibodies, including optimization, troubleshooting, and validation; prepares staining solutions and ensures proper controls.
Develops, executes and/or validates new procedures; provides guidance and training to Histotechnician I/II, Histotechnologists, students and lab staff.
Qualifications
Histology Technician: Associate’s Degree in Histotechnology, or High School Diploma with HT or HTL ASCP certification or ASCP eligible.
Eligibility Requirements: NAACLS accredited Histotechnician program completed within the last 5 years, or 60 semester hours with biology/chemistry credits, or an associate degree with biology/chemistry credits; one year of histopathology experience if eligible, and/or ASCP certification within one year of hire. ASCP certification required for HT II.
Histotechnologist: Bachelor’s degree in Histotechnology, or a related degree with biology/chemistry credits; current HTL ASCP certification and maintenance if required.
