What You Will Do GFT is seeking a Chief Highway Engineer to join our Highway team in a flexible/hybrid work environment. The role spans Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia offices.

Responsibilities The successful candidate shall have a minimum of 20 years of progressive design experience in roadway engineering design for highway, interchange, and/or urban roadway design services to public clients. As a technical specialist, the candidate will analyze roadway and drainage projects, establish design criteria and execute designs, while providing strategic and technical leadership of the Highway component of major projects.

Contribute to the development and execution of highway business plans, budgets and performance goals.

Provide advice and direction on major proposals, risk assessment, mitigation plans, and project execution plans.

Supervise staff and manage key technical relationships with clients.

Serve as Chief Engineer or Strategist for large, complex or strategic projects.

Possibly serve as Quality Assurance Manager.

Contribute to corporate strategy, plans and programs.

Develop scopes of work and provide input for negotiations on complex and/or large projects involving multiple disciplines and offices.

Act as technical specialist in the development of proposals.

Handle multiple concurrent assignments and manage time effectively.

Execute project scopes of work, manage technical developments, maintain budget and schedule.

Represent GFT at industry and professional events.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s Degree preferred.

Professional Engineer license and ability to obtain multiple jurisdictions.

20+ years of applicable experience in roadway engineering design for highway, interchange, and/or urban roadway services to public clients.

Working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Knowledge of advanced design software and computational software applications.

Experience supervising staff.

Knowledge of multiple disciplines such as roadway, transit, bridge, geotechnical, and civil/site.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to lead client presentations.

Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.

Compensation The salary range for this role is $170,000 - $190,000, dependent upon experience and geographic location.
