Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department’s mission through interactions with staff, manager and others as necessary. The ultrasound technologist’s primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for the radiologists, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary through the manager and lead technologist.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow.
Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures (biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative procedures, etc.).
Provides coverage for the department as determined necessary through either the Manager or Lead technologist.
Prepares exam rooms and ultrasound equipment for sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments.
Prepares patient for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty at all times.
Assumes responsibility for patient safety during the sonographic exam.
Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.
Sets up equipment and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure comfort, safety, and accurate data acquisition.
Performs duties in all areas of the department, including all campuses and outside locations as determined by the Manager or Lead technologist.
Works schedules as required, including regularly scheduled hours or overtime to meet department needs.
Performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure, following requisitions to provide proper studies and ensuring exams match patient condition and/or history.
Writes limitations to the sonographic exam when identified.
Works through radiologist requirements to provide appropriate views and films, and provides additional views and variations of techniques as required.
Provides service and care to patients of all ages.
Maintains equipment uptime by coordinating with management and service vendors and keeps exam rooms clean, tidy, and ready for use.
Follows high-level disinfection policies and procedures.
Exemplifies patient-focused customer service, ensuring professional communication and adherence to patient dignity and respect.
Handles telephone calls and service requests professionally and appropriately.
Reports all staffing or patient problems to the manager promptly.
Accommodates patient and staffing needs through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
Provides support to patients, including monitoring conditions and coordinating nursing or other assistance when necessary.
Operates all electronic systems (PACS, RIS, Epic, etc.) competently and efficiently.
Ensures accurate documentation, including requisitions, procedure completion, and insurance/billing requirements.
Utilizes the hospital’s Values to guide decision-making and support the division’s mission.
Adheres to established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned or necessary.
Follows all BMC RESPECT behavioral standards.
Education Associate's degree (or equivalent from a two-year college) or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography must be obtained prior to hire.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required
American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) – OB, AB, or RVT certification.
Accreditation must be attained prior to hire (one year to obtain accreditation for OB/GYN).
Experience Experience in a related clinical area is preferred.
Knowledge And Skills
Knowledge of principles and procedures of ultrasound and operation and maintenance of ultrasound equipment.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students, and physicians.
Special Working Conditions The ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage, so on occasion staff may need to work overtime or cover other shifts outside their own schedule.
