Position Ultrasound Technologist

Department Radiology

Schedule Per Diem

Position Summary Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist generates diagnostic sonographic images for radiologists while implementing department policy and procedures dictated by the manager and lead technologist.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Perform a wide variety of exams to support departmental workflow, including assisting physicians during sterile invasive procedures (e.g., biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative procedures).

Prepare exam rooms and ultrasound equipment according to infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.

Complete exams promptly while providing quality scans for Radiology and other departments.

Prepare patients for exams, ensuring comfort and modesty.

Assume responsibility for patient safety during sonographic examinations.

Adhere to all departmental policies and procedures.

Set up equipment and use proper positioning techniques to ensure patient safety and prevent compromised data acquisition or sonographer injury.

Execute duties across all campuses or outside the ultrasound department when required by hospital mission.

Work scheduled hours or overtime as required to meet department needs.

Perform appropriate studies per protocol, confirming that exam orders align with patient condition, and document any limitations.

Collaborate with radiologists to provide required views and additional techniques as needed.

Provide patient care to all ages.

Maintain equipment uptime by coordinating with maintenance vendors, and keep exam rooms clean and ready.

Follow high-level disinfection policies.

Deliver patient-focused customer service and meet communication standards.

Handle telephone calls and service requests professionally.

Treat patients and staff with dignity, reporting problems to management.

Adapt schedules and study timing to accommodate patient and staffing needs.

Understand departmental requirements, including reporting and communication of results.

Minimize patient discussions unrelated to care.

Monitor patient conditions, escalating when necessary to nursing or other support.

Operate electronic systems (PACS, RIS, Epic) efficiently.

Document requisitions, procedural steps, and billing requirements accurately.

Use BMC values as a decision-making basis.

Follow hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Adhere to BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

Job Description Characteristics Education Associate’s degree (or equivalent from a two-year college) or a certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) – OB or AB or RVT. Accreditation must be attained prior to hire, except OB/GYN (one year to obtain accreditation).

Experience Experience in related clinical area is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of ultrasound principles, procedures, and equipment operation and maintenance.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, coworkers, students, and physicians.

Special Working Conditions The ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage; staff may be required to work overtime or cover shifts other than their own.

Compensation Range $48.90 – $62.03. This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications. Additional factors such as education, experience, and licensure influence the final offer. BMC offers comprehensive benefits and resources to support employee and family well‑being.
