Job Summary An intermediary level custody officer performing prisoner guard and processing duties at the Dallas County jail (Lew Sterrett Justice Center).

Overview The DPD Detention Officer II performs guard duties by processing and monitoring the Dallas Police prisoners in custody at the Dallas County Jail and occasionally assisting Dallas Police Officers with prisoners' book‑in.

Essential Functions

Escorts and guards adult prisoners from the book‑in process to the medical screening site to the adult holding area.

Monitors and observes prisoners’ activities to ensure no disturbances occur; subdues and restrains aggressive or violent prisoners using approved methods to ensure the safety and security of staff and prisoners.

Takes appropriate actions to aid other officers, staff, Dallas County employees, and prisoners exposed to danger or in a situation where danger might be imminent.

Takes necessary actions to de‑escalate situations as necessary and appropriate.

Maintains the DPD Detention Division logs and writes reports on specific incidents at the Dallas County jail.

Responsible for performing all job tasks related to the nurses’ line functions.

Accepts prisoners from the Dallas City Marshals, the Dallas Police Officers, and the Dallas Fire Department Arson Investigators.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of laws and procedures of the custody of prisoners.

Advanced skills in de‑escalation techniques and ability to handle irate prisoners.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to give clear instructions and follow established procedures.

Ability to remain calm and in control in critical situations.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Ability to maintain physical fitness in order to restrain prisoners.

Ability to work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Education

High school diploma or GED.

Experience

Two (2) years of relevant work experience in dealing with juvenile or adult cases, public school districts, family assistance centers or other similar fields.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Texas driver’s license with good driving record or Texas Identification Card.

Attend and successfully complete an internal DPD Detention Officer course sponsored by the Dallas Police Academy.

Attend and complete annual refresher DPD Detention Officer training.

Equivalency

Associate degree (or higher) in criminal justice, business, public administration, or social science field plus one (1) year of the specified experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

Other Requirements

Must be 18 years of age.

Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test.

No FELONY or Class A Misdemeanor convictions.

No Class B Misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) years.

No family violence convictions.

Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any Felony, Class A, or Class B Misdemeanor.

No outstanding citations or warrants.

Salary Range $21.67 – $23.60 per hour. The salary listed on this posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
