Job Overview The Keene Police Department serves a community of approximately 23,100 residents. This role is available to certified police officers and aspiring candidates interested in a law‑enforcement career.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Complete the New Hampshire Police Academy or otherwise receive New Hampshire full‑time police certification
Effect arrests, use necessary restraints and force as required, and employ approved weapons and tactics
Exercise independent judgment regarding reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and use of force
Operate law‑enforcement vehicles at high speeds, in congested traffic, and on challenging road conditions
Communicate effectively via radio, telephone, and in court; understand shouted commands in emergencies
Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations, including vehicle exits, lifting, climbing, and barrier penetration
Load, unload, aim, and fire department firearms under stressed conditions
Conduct searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and outdoor areas; detain persons and stop vehicles
Engage in patrol functions, including rotating shifts, foot patrol, and securing premises
Demonstrate court‑presentation skills and collect evidence for criminal cases
Endure verbal and mental abuse in hostile environments
Perform emergency rescues, traffic direction, medical aid, and evacuation of people from danger
Transport prisoners and persons under involuntary emergency admission using restraints
Extinguish small fires and use other relevant equipment
Read and comprehend legal documents and prepare citations, affidavits, and warrants
Process arrested suspects, take photographs, and obtain fingerprints
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Patrol assigned zones on foot or by vehicle
Answer calls for service and prevent crime
Investigate criminal offenses and traffic accidents
Make arrests, transport prisoners, issue citations, and serve legal papers
Testify in court and before administrative bodies
Apply search and arrest warrants and take juveniles, intoxicated, or mentally ill persons into custody
Conduct preliminary and follow‑up investigations, prepare reports, and provide first aid
Speak to organizations, assist crime victims, and collect evidence at crime scenes
Participate in raids, high‑risk warrants, and physical custody operations
Enforce protective orders and perform duties required to preserve public peace and dignity
Collaborate with city departments, community organizations, and citizens to solve problems
Customers
All citizens, residents and visitors of Keene
All city employees and other law‑enforcement and justice agencies
All persons taken into custody by the department
Qualifications
U.S. citizenship
High school diploma or GED; college education and/or military experience desirable
Minimum age 21 years
Pass written, oral, physical fitness, polygraph, medical, psychological, and background checks
Certified or certifiable by the NH Police Standards & Training Council
Validated New Hampshire driver’s license and full‑time police officer certification
Must live within 30‑minute response time to the city border and establish legal residence in New Hampshire within six months of appointment
Basic knowledge of Department RMS, Operations Division, mission statement, rules, regulations, and order
Knowledge of court procedures, city geography, and state criminal, motor vehicle, juvenile codes, and ordinances
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional language skills desirable
Skills & Knowledge
Use of lethal and non‑lethal weapons, restraints, radio, computers, and emergency vehicles
Operation of traffic enforcement equipment and emergency response tools
Preparation and writing of clear, accurate arrest and incident reports
Advanced knowledge of law‑enforcement principles, court procedures, and city ordinances
Sound judgment and the ability to act quickly in emergency situations
Excellent verbal and written communication and public presentation skills
Professional appearance and teamwork orientation

Certifications & Licenses
Valid New Hampshire driver’s license

Pass the detailed medical examination and prescribed physical fitness test per NH Police Standards & Training Council rules
Perform all essential duties and responsibilities of the police officer position
Work Environment Police officers may work indoors, outdoors, or in a vehicle for extended periods. They must operate in extreme weather, during day or night, and may encounter chemical, radioactive, fire, or motor‑vehicle hazards. Shift work is universal, including weekends and holidays. Emergencies may require prolonged periods without relief.
