About the role We are currently looking for a generalist in‑house counsel to provide legal expertise and support with a focus on commercial transactions and data privacy. The position will lead significant aspects of Forter’s legal function, supporting sales and business teams in the Americas with contract drafting, review and negotiation and compliance with local laws, including data privacy laws. The role is located in New York and requires in‑office presence at least three days per week.
What you’ll be doing
Support Sales, Business Development and Customer Success organizations, predominantly in the Americas region.
Independently negotiate commercial agreements, including privacy components.
Support business teams in drafting and negotiating agreements with vendors.
Advise business teams on legal compliance, including on data protection and privacy issues.
Advise business teams on recommended courses of action and legal risk, with the ability to judge when to elevate identified issues as appropriate.
Assist in updating contract templates, drafting global corporate policies and processes, and building internal processes to enable the company on such policies.
What you’ll need
At least 5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably with at least 2 years in a law firm counseling rapid‑growth technology companies.
Accredited law degree from a top university.
Admission to the bar and a current license in the relevant jurisdiction.
Substantial experience with drafting and negotiating complex legal agreements (sales, partnership, procurement, NDAs, data processing agreements, others); experience with other internal company functions or areas of law is desired (such as intellectual property or privacy).
Substantive experience with commercial technology transactions.
Substantive experience dealing with and collaborating with Sales, Sales Management, Executive team on complex contract negotiations.
Experience advising on privacy and data protection laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Highly responsive and service‑oriented attitude.
Ability to multi‑task and work independently with minimal supervision, while adapting quickly to a rapidly changing and challenging environment.
Practical yet creative problem‑solving approach that emphasizes addressing business needs while protecting Forter’s interests.
Ability to balance priorities and know when to seek executive direction.
Ability to work across multiple time zones.
Fluent in English.
