Winona County is accepting applications for this part‑time position until 4:00 p.m. November 19, 2025; preference will be given to those who apply by 4:00 p.m. November 3, 2025.

This position starts at $23.76/hour (DOQ) with advancement up to $31.52/hour.

The Bailiff position is part‑time, with an estimated average of 10–15 hours per week; actual hours vary significantly depending on the Court System's schedule.

Characteristics Of Class Under the administrative direction of the Court Administrator, an employee in this classification is responsible for acting as a liaison between the Judge and jurors during a jury trial and other court sessions. An employee may also assist with routine duties normally assigned to court administration staff. Bailiffs facilitate efficient courtroom proceedings and are responsible for preparing and securing the courtroom and juries, assisting victims and witnesses during court proceedings, and aiding judges and attorneys.

Examples Of Duties

Takes attendance for jurors reporting for duty, keeping jurors together during breaks.

Prepares the jury and courtroom for deliberation; orders meals for deliberating jurors.

Prepares courtrooms for jury trials and checks in on attorneys and clients.

Secures, sequesters, and escorts jurors to the courtroom.

Assists judges in coordinating court proceedings by retrieving documents or photocopying materials.

Assists parties in checking in for court hearings.

Acts as a liaison between judges, juries, attorneys, and witnesses.

Maintains order in the courtroom during trial and guards the jury from outside contact.

Provides jury escort to restaurants and other areas outside the courtroom to prevent jury contact with the public and guards lodging of sequestered juries.

Reports the need for police or medical assistance to the Sheriff’s office.

Any other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of the court system.

Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System.

Ability to listen to what other people are saying and ask questions as appropriate.

Ability to identify the nature of problems.

Ability to exercise good judgment in recommending possible solutions for juror difficulties.

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with judges, jurors, court staff, public officials, and citizens of the community.

Ability to speak clearly so that it is understandable to listeners.

Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.

Ability to concentrate and not be distracted while performing a task over a period of time.

Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

For Pre‑Employment

High School graduate or equivalent. One year of related experience in courts, a legal office, or dealing directly with the public is desirable.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three years.

Must pass the required background check.
