Schedules students into appropriate academic course placements. Utilizes appropriate counseling techniques to accommodate a variety of functioning levels. Provides career and educational counseling. Acts as a student advocate. Implements the prevention guidance curriculum through classroom lessons and content area infusion. Supports and reinforces the key role of classroom teachers. Serves as a consultant to staff and parents. Counsels individuals and small groups toward social and emotional resiliency. Consults with parents and family members on individual student needs. Acts as a liaison among school staff, parents, and external agencies. Conducts parent group meetings and workshops. Provides in-service training to staff for intervention planning and implementation. Devises and applies counseling techniques suitable for various functioning levels. Is accessible to all students for career, educational, and personal counseling. Increases student awareness of the relationship between school and work through staff consultation. Participates in program development, maintenance, evaluation, and enhancement. Collaborates on early identification, remediation, and effective referral processes. Promotes a positive school climate through leadership roles. Engages in continuous professional growth. Job Summary The school counselor collaborates with staff, parents, and the community to foster a caring climate through a comprehensive developmental counseling program. They provide education, prevention, early detection, and intervention to support student success. The counselor reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.

This position requires a valid Alaska type C certificate. The work days are based on the AEA negotiated pay scale. Details are available on the

Labor Relations Department website . Positions with 0.50 to 1.0 FTE are eligible for the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS); those with less than 0.39 FTE are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Physical / Mental Demands Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing are required. Visual abilities are necessary.
