Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective atmosphere.
Conducts school medical screenings.
Coordinates medical plans for school sponsored trips.
Provides nursing services including:
Interpreting health history and developing appropriate care plans.
Facilitating, monitoring, and assessing student health.
Immunization status review.
Treatment, medication management, diabetes and seizure management.
Health counseling and linkage with community providers.
Health promotion, injury and disease prevention, intervention and education.
Treats students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
Uses current technology to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Creates a nursing environment conducive to practice.
Works as a partner with parents, families, and the community.
Performs other duties to meet healthcare needs of students and staff as needed or assigned.

Job Summary The school nurse provides support to the instructional process by serving as a nurse with specific responsibility for identifying, evaluating, and providing health services for students. The school nurse collects and reviews information on the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner. The nurse develops and maintains a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions tailored to individual student needs and administers medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by the student’s physician and district policy. This position collaborates with teachers, school staff, and administrators; and responds to inquiries from students’ parents/guardians regarding student health and wellness. The school nurse may provide clinical supervision to licensed and unlicensed personnel. This position reports to and is evaluated by the principal with nursing practice input by the director of Health Services.
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based on the AEA negotiated pay scale. For more info, see the
Labor Relations Department website . Positions from 0.50 to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS); 0.40 to 0.49 FTE with the Alaska Employees’ Retirement System (PERS); and less than 0.39 FTE are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
