Overview
Program Assistant role at St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore. Schedule: Saturday - Sunday, 11:00pm-7:00am. The Program Assistant (PA) provides 24-hour awake coverage and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the shelter, welfare, safety and comfort of guests, and daily support to shelter guests. The PA offers crisis intervention to callers seeking shelter, resources, or referrals. The PA collaborates with clients, case managers, and other shelter staff to meet guests' needs with dignity and care, helping them move toward stability and self-sufficiency. Responsibilities
Assure that daily, weekly, and monthly housekeeping maintenance tasks are completed in a satisfactory and timely manner. Assign volunteer tasks to guests of the Emergency Shelter and support guests to ensure tasks are carried out satisfactorily. Ensure the safety and security of guests, volunteers, visitors and staff by communicating guest expectations and conducting internal and external perimeter checks during shift. Promptly and effectively respond to potential emergencies by following agency and shelter protocols. Ensure children are supervised by their parents and encourage children and youth to participate in organized activities. Observe when maintenance supplies need re-ordering and inform supervisors accordingly. Support daily scheduled resident activities and events. Assist clients with daily activities of living, including meal distribution and clean up, resource navigation, and transportation coordination. Maintain accurate records by ensuring residents sign in upon entry, tracking attendance, and addressing discrepancies to support efficient shelter operations. Mediates interpersonal conflicts between guests and maintains a peaceful and respectful atmosphere. Secondary duties
Store maintenance supplies properly and keep an adequate daily supply; complete the daily maintenance checklist. Report repairs or replacements to the immediate supervisor for direction and follow-up. Maintain cleanliness and sanitary conditions in common areas and restrooms. Assist with the pickup of donations and food orders as needed. Complete incident reports when necessary. Assist with and attend special events held by the Center and St. Vincent de Paul as necessary. Support a welcoming and positive environment for volunteers and work with them effectively. Uphold the vision, mission and values of St. Vincent de Paul. Attend and represent St. Vincent de Paul at external meetings and events as necessary. Stay awake and alert during on-duty hours. Perform other duties as assigned, within the scope of the position. Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED preferred. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to read, write, and speak English. Ability and willingness to relate with others respectfully and work well as a team member. Ability to maintain professional boundaries with program participants and refer them to case management staff. Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of persons who are materially poor and/or homeless, and ability to work with persons of all backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner. An understanding and respect for client confidentiality. Ability to organize oneself and others to accomplish daily tasks. Knowledge of floor and building maintenance; basic handyperson skills.
