The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country. BEDC and the Wastewater Capital Program (WWCP) oversee design and construction of major capital projects with emphasis on environmental health and safety, quality, schedule, budget, and client service. The WWCP staff deliver projects through coordination with BEDC support groups and agency bureaus. BEDC seeks to hire an Assistant Chemical Engineer to serve as an Assistant Project Manager for the WWCP directorate in Queens, NY. The selected candidate will be an integral member of the project team and report to an Accountable Manager. Under supervision, s/he will assist the project team in achieving project goals and milestones, ensure that program schedules, reports, and work products conform to the scope of work, and support contract modifications related to scope, cost, and schedule for successful project completion. S/he will serve as design and construction support staff, ensuring EH&S is incorporated throughout the project lifecycle, and focus on client service with operating bureaus, implementation of project delivery procedures, and coordination with BEDC support groups (e.g., Project Controls, Permit Resource). S/he will develop seamless communication with agency bureaus, other city agencies, and key stakeholders, monitor permit requirements, assist in resolving project issues, mitigate risk, and manage quality of project delivery through ongoing KPIs related to budget, schedule, and contract metrics. The candidate will conduct reliable field condition surveys, prepare accurate reports on observations, participate in field investigations to develop alternatives, and attend environmental compliance and safety trainings. The position requires critical thinking, independent data analysis, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility in job responsibilities. The candidate may work extended days occasionally and perform fieldwork that involves uneven terrain, steep slopes, and stairs in various weather conditions. The role may require operating a motor vehicle for site visits, equipment testing, inspections, and meetings with project stakeholders.
