General Purpose The Area Supervisor is a member of the Store Leadership who is responsible for a specific, assigned area of the Store as well as the general operations and supervision of the Store when functioning as the Manager on Duty. Area Supervisors are responsible for opening and closing the Store, supervising Associates, and maintaining a friendly, easy‑to‑shop environment. They ensure proper merchandise presentation, maintain a clean work area at all times, and execute and supervise Company operational processes as needed.

Essential Functions Maintaining Safe & Secure Environments

Safety is the number one priority; practices safe behaviors in all tasks.

Maintains high awareness on the sales floor to create a safe, secure shopping environment for everyone.

Immediately corrects or reports any unsafe conditions or practices to Store Leadership.

Responsible for building security, including entrance/exit control (Associate entry/egress, receiving door, daily trash removal, etc.), Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) device checks, cash office security, armored carrier pick‑ups, and register area.

Removes clutter and ensures safe, clear egress to emergency exits.

Responsible for customer safety—preventing accidents, reporting incidents, and executing emergency procedures.

Tests all fire alarm systems as scheduled and responds to after‑hours alarms when requested.

Customer Service

Treats all customers, associates, and other leaders with respect.

Demonstrates courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism at all times; recognizes associates through Company recognition programs.

Personal and Store Brand

Represents and supports the Company brand at all times.

Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with the Company Dress Code and ensures all associates adhere to it.

Keeps all areas of the store clean, well‑maintained, and merchandised to standard.

Responsible for daily trash removal.

General Merchandising

Ensures recovery, sizing, and markdowns are completed to Company standards through teaching, task assignment, and follow‑up.

Responsible for receiving merchandise truck when needed.

Processes all merchandise with a sense of urgency.

Handles receipt of all non‑merchandise inbound deliveries (signs, supplies, special deliveries, etc.).

Maintains cleanliness and organization of all stockrooms.

Helps deliver and place merchandise on the sales floor after processing.

Ensures any back‑stock is secured and processed per Company policy.

Merchandises each department including back‑stock and leads reduction of loss due to damage.

Ensures compliance to monthly presentation guidelines in assigned area.

Handles floor moves and signing, including promotional signing as needed.

Manages re‑wraps as needed.

Loss Prevention

Understands and complies with the Loss Prevention Awareness Program; maintains a strong customer service presence on the sales floor.

Demonstrates integrity and honesty in all interactions with associates and customers; safeguards confidential information, cash, and credit card information and merchandise.

Maintains the Public View Monitor (PVM) system properly.

Conducts “Code 50” package inspections.

Executes Company Best Practices and maximizes productivity by minimizing steps and touches.

Front‑End Supervision and Operations

Executes Company Best Practices and maximizes productivity by minimizing extra touches.

Maintains pace, energy, and presence at the front end, managing the line to expedite customer wait time.

Trains and coaches associates on cash registers, shortage control policies, and other front‑end procedures to meet friendly and productivity standards.

Controls retail associate break schedule for backups, lunches, and breaks.

Ensures all equipment works properly and maintains supplies and recovery for the front end.

Ensures go‑backs are expedited, properly scanned, security‑tagged, and ticketed.

Teaches all associates the “Scan and Bag” best practice.

Ensures salability of merchandise on the front end, aisle tables, men’s/women’s 4‑way features, and specialty racks.

Fitting Rooms

Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of the fitting rooms.

Ensures all fitting‑room garment tags are audited and accounted for per Company policy.

Enforces go‑back compliance throughout the day; all merchandise returned to the sales floor must be ticketed, scanned, nubbed, and security‑tagged as needed.

Administrative Duties (Assigned by Store Manager)

Ensures cash pulls and bank deposits occur per Company policy.

Manages front‑end control when needed; adheres to policies for refund approval, associate purchase approval, securing tills and cash in safe, register paid‑outs/ins, void approval, register media, and break schedules.

Handles payroll administration including daily punch edits, associate scheduling compliance, Sunday payroll transmission, and payroll reporting as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Store Manager.

Qualifications and Special Skills

Excellent verbal communication skills.

Fluency in English.

Prior customer service and supervisory experience preferred.

Familiarity with point‑of‑sale equipment and applications.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations common to retail.

Ability to work evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements/ADA Ability to use all store equipment, including PDTs, registers, and PC as required.

Ability to stand, walk, and move around the store up to 100% of working time.

Able to regularly bend at the waist, squat, kneel, climb, carry, reach, and stoop. Occasionally push, pull, and lift more than 25 lb. Use of janitorial equipment, rolling racks, ladders, and other assigned supplies. Certain assignments may require additional qualifications such as regularly pushing, pulling, and lifting more than 20 lb. for stockroom shifts.

Compensation & Benefits Base pay range: $16.50 – $17.00 per hour, dependent on experience, skills, qualifications, education, certifications, seniority, and location. The range listed is one component of the total compensation package; other rewards vary by position and location. Benefits offered to all associates include Accident, Critical Illness, Vision, Auto, Home, and Pet insurance programs; Associate Discount, Identity Protection, Associate Purchase Program, Benefit Hub Discount Mall, Employee Assistance Program, and Commuter Benefits; 401(k) (service requirements); Employee Stock Purchase Program; Ross Cares Fund; College Discounts; Sick Pay (where legally required); and Referral Bonuses. All full‑time associates (including area supervisors, assistant store managers, and store managers) are eligible for extended benefits including medical/dental/vision health insurance, legal insurance, vacation buy, flexible spending account, health savings account, life/ADD insurance, long‑term disability, enhanced maternity and parental leave benefit, vacation pay accrued at a rate of 10 days/year after eligibility commences, and 9 personal and company holidays. AS, ASM and SM associates in stores and exempt corporate and buying office roles are also eligible to receive a bonus based on individual and business performance.
