Position Summary:
The
Supplier Quality Manager (SQM)
plays a critical role in ensuring that all suppliers meet Virginia Transformer’s standards for quality, performance, and reliability. This position is responsible for qualifying, auditing, and continuously improving supplier performance while collaborating with Procurement, Engineering, and Operations to ensure material and component integrity.
The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in manufacturing and quality systems, a hands‑on approach to problem‑solving, and the ability to lead complex initiatives across multiple supplier locations. This position requires up to
50% travel , both domestically and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
Lead supplier qualification, approval, and development processes in alignment with company quality and engineering standards.
Conduct supplier audits (process, system, and product) to ensure compliance with ISO 9001, customer, and regulatory requirements.
Establish and monitor supplier performance metrics, including PPM, on‑time delivery, corrective actions, and cost of poor quality.
Drive root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions (8D, 5‑Why, FMEA) for supplier‑related nonconformances.
Collaborate with Engineering and Procurement on supplier selection and new product introduction (NPI) to ensure readiness and capability.
Support supplier onboarding and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and reduce supply chain risk.
Maintain supplier quality documentation — including PPAP, control plans, inspection plans, and certifications.
Present supplier performance reviews and improvement plans to senior leadership.
Support cost reduction, lead‑time improvement, and standardization efforts across global suppliers.
Ensure supplier compliance with Virginia Transformer’s environmental, safety, and quality expectations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related technical field (Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial preferred).
7+ years of experience in supplier quality, quality engineering, or manufacturing quality, ideally within electrical or industrial equipment manufacturing.
Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 or similar quality systems; ASQ certification preferred.
Experience managing supplier audits, qualification, and corrective action programs.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional teams and drive measurable performance improvements.
Proficiency with quality tools such as PPAP, FMEA, 8D, SPC, and MSA.
Excellent communication, organizational, and relationship‑building skills.
Proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Willingness to travel up to 50% (domestic and international).
