Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The UNC Department of Computer Science was founded by Turing Award winner Dr. Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. in 1964. It is the second oldest free-standing computer science department in the United States. In 2020, the Shanghai Rankings Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked our department #17 in the world and #11 in the U.S. for computer science. In 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked our graduate program in the top 25 of graduate computer science departments. The department is housed in Sitterson Hall and Brooks Building, a connected two-building complex built with infrastructure to address the specific needs of a computer science department.

Position Summary The Business Development Specialist is directly responsible for developing and executing strategic events and programs that support the department’s teaching and research mission, fundraising initiatives, alumni engagement, and outreach to external partners. The role collaborates with cross-university units (Admissions, University Career Services, the Arts & Sciences Foundation, and Corporate & Foundation Relations) and external partners (Industry and Peer Institutions) to enhance existing programs and develop new strategies for program management, planning, execution, and analysis. The role is essential to maintain the visibility for the department and service to its students and faculty and requires an autonomous level of program management skills. This position reports to the Director of External Relations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely and to convey information in a professional and courteous manner when interacting with colleagues, faculty, industry partners, donors, alumni and peer institutions

Ability to work collegially and independently within a goal-oriented environment

Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities

Ability to strategize and design programs based on department goals and priorities

Strong project management skills

Experience and knowledge of budgeting and accounting procedures

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Experience managing events, outreach, or development/fundraising programs. UNC Chapel Hill experience is a plus.
