Job Summary This full-time position provides direct advocate services to victims and witnesses assigned through the Director of the Victim-Witness Program in the criminal justice system in York County. Responsibilities include information and assistance to victims of crimes, liaison between victims, witnesses and the District Attorney, trial support to the DA and/or Assistant District Attorneys, and many other duties detailed below.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities
Contact victims to assess physical, emotional, and economic injuries and determine disposition of case. Inform victims about enforcement of state statutory Victims Rights.
Maintain contact and provide information throughout case duration; notify victims of court hearings, sentencing, restitution, plea negotiations, and solicit input in District Attorney recommendations.
Prepare and send correspondence; familiarize victims and witnesses with criminal justice process including grand jury, arraignment, motion days, plea, sentencing, probation, deferred disposition, and appeals.
Determine restitution amounts for personal injury and property crimes, assist victims in compiling documentation, and notify District Attorney of restitution requests.
Notifies all eligible victims of Victims Compensation Fund and assists with application for compensation.
Assist District Attorney in producing victims and witnesses for trial by maintaining contact, notifying all civil victims of required court appearances, arranging transportation as needed.
Provide prosecutor with info about victim availability for trials and hearings.
Provide referrals to victims to appropriate agencies and services (e.g., Caring Unlimited, Sexual Assault Response Support Services, Victim Compensation Program).
Prepare crime victims for court hearings; attend hearings with victims as support and explain Court rulings; hearings may be via Zoom or in person.
Inform victims about rights to submit Victim Impact Statements for sentencing hearings and coordinate the process.
Coordinate with Department of Corrections Victim Services regarding victim contact and assist with submitting Prisoner Release Notification requests.
Submit all requests for witness fee and mileage payment to Office Manager; disburse payments; coordinate out-of-state hotel, transportation, and food allowances for victims traveling to Maine.
Make mandatory child protective reports to DHHS when appropriate; assist in opening cases in DA database and referral to law enforcement.
Assist crime victims and prosecutors in preparing for court.
Maintain professional knowledge by attending educational workshops, establishing networks, and participating in additional training.

Salary $21.26 - $23.94 per hour
