Key Role:
Provide support to maintaining facility compliance as relates to biological safety, bio-waste management and biocontainment protocol in a research facility. Provide direct support in the handling, coordination & oversight of biological materials & processes. Coordinate related services in direct support to laboratory & support personnel in areas of biological safety. Review and implement technical standards, guidelines, policies, and formal regulations that meet all appropriate requirements. Recommend & implement measures to ensure appropriate work methods, processes, or handling of materials as relates to biological safety requirements. Conduct inspections in order to ensure compliance with biological safety standards and environmental compliance regulations. Coordination and management of related data. Collection, labeling, and organization of biological indicators when necessary. Act as the primary contact and resource for research and support personnel. Maintain all required records and documentation. Report the results of biological data and analyses, and recommend corrective measures to be applied. Develop SOPs, documents and specific reports within project timelines according to facility program requirements. Interact with various personnel associated with various processes.
Basic Qualifications:
BA/BS in Biology or applied sciences or equivalent.
5-7 years’ experience in laboratory, manufacturing, or research environment.
Knowledge of biological safety and biocontainment practices and principals. This includes knowledge of use of biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, spore strips and their role in maintaining biocontainment and decontamination processes.
Knowledge of biological safety practices and environmental regulatory compliance.
Additional Requirements:
Registered or Certified Biosafety Professional.
Physical Requirements:
Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your whole body.
Utilization of appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) such as safety shoes, hard hats, hearing, and eye protection is required. Ability to climb ladders, reach overhead and lift to 50lbs. Industrial work environment that may include loud noise, heat stress, work indoors and outdoors.
Ability to carry out housekeeping duties with minimal direction, following prescribed methods & directives.
Assignments may require entry into biocontainment facilities, utility plants, a variety of storage buildings and constructions sites. Work within the containment laboratory requires decontamination showers.
You must be physically able to move freely in environments that are restricted in space, unsteady or otherwise not easily accessible. Ability to climb ladders, and lift to 50 lbs.
As a condition for employment, all personnel entering the BSL-3 biocontainment facilities at Plum Island shall not be in contact with specific susceptible animals and their premises off Plum Island for a period of five (5) days after leaving biocontainment. Currently, restricted species are cattle, sheep, goats, deer, other ruminants, and swine. Contact with horses, birds (agricultural and pet birds) and rabbits are normally permitted, but restrictions may be placed on staff working with or near-contagious agents affecting these species. Restricted livestock or other restricted animals may not be housed on the premises where the employee lives and where the quarantine cannot be enforced.
