Senior Biosafety Specialist

Overview Georgia State University’s Office of Research and Environmental Safety (ORES) supports research and instructional laboratories, animal facilities, and environmental programs to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices for health and safety. ORES is a vital part of the Office of Research, under the Vice President for Research & Economic Development.
Responsibilities
Review and assess research protocols involving biological materials, animals, laboratory operations, and construction/renovation plans to ensure compliance with NIH, CDC, USDA, and other federal, state, local, and university requirements.
Participate in the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) activities.
Oversee training assignment, tracking, and develop and present biological safety training and educational programs.
Manage biomedical waste disposal and record keeping; ensure proper packaging, labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal of biohazardous materials.
Prepare technical reports and outcome measurements from research proposals, lab assessments, and surveys.
Assist with certification and testing of laboratory safety equipment (biosafety cabinets, safety showers, eyewash stations).
Respond to laboratory and research facility emergencies involving biological materials.
Qualifications
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Public Health, or related field; three years of related experience.
Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Must be able to pass U.S. Department of Justice security clearance.
Preferred: Advanced degree; experience in an academic setting; training or ability to complete HAZWOPER (40 hours) within first 6 months.
