Note:
This is a Full-Time permanent 10-month position. You will work August to June and be off for eight (8) weeks during the summer. Benefits continue during the summer; pay during the summer is not provided. During the working months, you will pay a prorated amount to cover the cost of benefits during the time you are not working.
Position Summary Performs a variety of health care related services within a school setting and assists with clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. This 10-month position, under direct supervision, provides basic nursing care in the assigned area.
All Licensed Practical Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. Services include, but are not limited to, immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.
Essential Functions
Document patient history using structured, written guidelines, policies, and forms.
Assist patients with the completion of self-histories or self-assessment questionnaires.
Administer medication/immunizations when an initial assessment has been completed by the RN or when policy dictates that an initial assessment is not required.
Make referrals and/or follow up with patients to ensure they make and keep referral appointments based on policies, procedures, and standing orders.
Contact or follow up with providers for information on patients and their care.
Document information on the appropriate paper or electronic client record, nursing care plan, or other documents.
Track immunizations, follow up, and enter data into North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR).
Obtain heights, weights, vital signs, hearing and vision screening, and lab specimens when within LPN scope of practice as ordered by providers or standing orders.
Assist medical personnel during clinical exams and procedures.
Ensure clinics are stocked and supplied with materials; set up equipment and supplies.
Provide educational materials and counseling on communicable disease, diet and nutrition, medication, and general health care based on teaching plans/protocols assigned by the RN.
Respond to urgent and/or emergent events requiring public health interventions. May be trained for duties outside regular work, may require after-hours work, and may be assigned to different locations as needed (emergencies include outbreaks, severe weather, disasters, acts of terrorism, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of two years of healthcare experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited LPN program.
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: No
Licenses and Certifications
Current license to practice as an LPN in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association valid for at least 90 days after hire.
May require valid NC or SC driver's license.
Mecklenburg County Vehicle Operator's Permit (COP) may be required.
Annual Mecklenburg County HR background screening required.
