Medical Technologist III
to work at Austin State Hospital. The position is full‑time, day shift, and non‑telework eligible. Salary ranges from $4,263.16 to $6,779.25 per month, paid monthly. Travel up to 10% and occasional overtime are expected. Qualified applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold a baccalaureate or associate’s degree, with appropriate professional certification (MT, MLS, or MLT by ASCP or equivalent).
Job Overview This role performs routine clinical laboratory work on bodily tissues and fluids, analyzes, logs, and reports test results, operates and maintains laboratory instruments (microscopes, automated analyzers, etc.), and ensures adherence to quality control and compliance standards. The position includes teaching Medical Laboratory Science trainees and supervising bench staff.
Key Responsibilities
Attend work on a regular basis, with a potential rotating shift schedule, extended shift, and overtime as required.
Perform clinical laboratory procedures in the Chemistry/Urinalysis department per standards and protocols.
Analyze samples, operate equipment, and maintain records to support medical diagnosis and treatment.
Evaluate and interpret complex data before releasing results; enter data into laboratory information systems.
Perform startup, cleanings, calibrations, and minor maintenance on laboratory equipment; troubleshoot and adjust equipment as needed.
Provide instruction and bench supervision of Medical Laboratory Science trainees and new employees.
Actively participate in quality control review and proficiency testing.
Maintain inventory of supplies, ensuring timely orders and supply availability.
Demonstrate skill in medical technology competencies in Chemistry and Urinalysis.
Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Knowledge of general laboratory concepts and practices, specifically in Chemistry and Urinalysis testing.
Knowledge of laboratory safety and sample‑handling techniques.

Certifications & Licensure Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification is acceptable.
Initial Screening Criteria
Earned a baccalaureate degree or associate’s degree.
Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP, or equivalent.
Additional Requirements
Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
Meet age requirements: at least 18 years for state‑operated facilities; 21 years for Waco Center for Youth applicants.
Flexibility in work hours, including overtime and extended hours.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations.
Resistance to vaccines for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza; alternative protective measures if non‑immunized.
