Summary We are seeking a Science Lab Technician who will assist Science Lab Coordinators in maintaining science laboratories for student instruction.

Responsibilities

Prepare chemical solutions, student unknowns, and standardize solutions accurately following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to be used by instructors to grade students.

Document information about lab reagents (type, chemical make‑up, concentration, etc.).

Develop and update SOPs for the standardization and creation of solutions to accompany student lab procedures.

Communicate information about the chemical and concentrations to all chemistry faculty as needed.

Provide input on the creation of new labs with faculty to create procedures and guarantee proper chemical handling and waste procedures.

Aid Science Lab Coordinators in the ordering of supplies and equipment for biology, chemistry, physical science and physics labs; maintain SCC credit card purchase records and receipts.

Wash delicate glassware used by students, faculty, and technicians, including volumetric pipets and burets.

Organize laboratory rooms and ensure correct supplies and equipment are available according to Lab Coordinator's instructions between and before lab periods, including lab practicals and exams.

Maintain stock and laboratory equipment, including pH meters, spectrophotometers and instrument gas.

Open and close (lock) lab classroom door and maintain student equipment drawers.

Assist instructors in lab activities, greenhouse, aquarium and exhibit care ensuring that any hazardous materials, biological and chemical, are disposed of according to federal and state guidelines.

Maintain waste logs and ensure proper safety guidelines are communicated to faculty and students; maintain and supply the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to instructors, students; coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety Officer for waste collection and disposal.

Update lab schedules and inventories.

Assist Lab Coordinators as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two‑year college or technical school with at least six months general laboratory experience in a related setting.

Preferred Experience

Ability to operate microscopes, balances, pH meters, autoclave and spectrophotometers.

Computer software experience including word processing, database and spreadsheets.
