Overview
Test Laboratory Project Engineer (onsite) at Johnson Controls – on-site role located in New Freedom, PA. This position is onsite and requires commuting distance or relocation. Base pay range is $86,000.00/yr - $115,000.00/yr. Your actual pay will be based on skills and experience. What You Will Do
Our Test Laboratory Project Engineer performs detailed engineering tasks to evaluate engineering alternatives, analyze data, create CAD drawings, and prepare specifications and reports for design, development, construction, and commissioning of mechanical, refrigeration, and process (MRP) elements for HVAC test facilities. The role interacts with engineers, suppliers, and other departments to facilitate project completion. Project work includes MRP systems that simulate precise and extreme environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, precipitation, airflow, liquid flow, high-pressure vapor flow). This position is onsite at Johnson Controls Advanced Development and Engineering Center (JADEC). Develop conceptual designs and cost estimates for related MRP project elements during budgeting and initial project phases. Collect, analyze, and interpret data; develop engineering computer programs (e.g., Excel, EES, LabVIEW) and basic process system designs for sub-systems and components. Prepare final designs including drawings, RFQs, BOMs, and construction specifications; respond to contractor and engineering RFIs. Coordinate with electrical, controls, and other disciplines to facilitate state-of-the-art HVAC test facility designs. Create refrigeration and process system designs and develop P&IDs for projects simulating extreme environmental conditions. Review project designs for compliance with applicable codes, standards, and company policies. Plan and conduct on-site startup, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning of MRP systems for test facility projects. Support capital planning and execution; ensure safety, quality, confidentiality, and ethics policies are followed, including online training. What We Look For
Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree 2 – 5 years of relevant experience in process system design or heat transfer laboratory testing; discipline in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics Experience with mechanical design in the HVAC industry (preferred) or post-MSME/PE license; knowledge of industry codes and standards (ASHRAE, AHRI, UL, AMCA, ASME, ANSI, SMACNA, UBC/ICC, etc.) Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Office, and AutoCAD or equivalent Ability to operate independently on detailed tasks with high accuracy Ability to multitask and collaborate with stakeholders Strong interpersonal skills to contribute as part of an internal customer service team HIRING SALARY RANGE: $86,000 - $115,000. Salary determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, location, and market data. Includes a competitive bonus plan and benefits package.
