Summary Under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, the Behavioral Health Attendant (BHA) provides direct, non‑clinical support to patients requiring observation and who may be experiencing mental health and behavioral challenges. BHAs collaborate with clinical staff to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment while upholding patient dignity and adhering to Brown University Health care values. Responsibilities

Receive reports on assigned patients before assuming observation responsibilities.

Conduct continuous or intermittent patient observation as assigned.

Report changes in patient condition to nursing or clinical staff promptly.

Monitor and document patient behavior, mood, and activity according to established protocols.

Maintain patient focus at all times, free from distractions.

Assist patients with daily activities such as hygiene, meals, and mobility as directed by the registered nurse.

Engage patients throughout the shift in a compassionate and respectful manner, providing interaction and recreational activities in accordance with training.

De‑escalate situations using approved verbal intervention techniques to promote safety for patients and staff.

Obtain certification and annual recertification in full safety care level 1 training, BLS, and safe patient handling.

Attend staff development, supervision, and meetings as assigned.

Ensure the care area is free of hazards and compliant with safety guidelines, assisting with the maintenance of clean and orderly patient care spaces.

Observe patient rights, maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient information.

Follow hospital policy and procedures regarding patient and staff safety practices.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School graduate or equivalent (required).

Education in a human services field preferred.

Participation in patient care activities and physical management of patients as per safe patient handling and safety care training.

Pay Range $20.48 - $20.98 per hour
