If possible, log in as an OE member before posting - this allows you to come back later to edit or remove the post. Jobs must have a connection to ornithology. Choose the correct category for your job. There’s a brief description of each category on that category’s page. Post the text of the announcement in the box, not a PDF. This enables better searching and makes your job more visible to searchers. Internships or volunteer opportunities that charge a fee for participation should be posted in the workshops and short courses section under Forums.

Responsibilities Spend your summer doing field work in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We are looking for field technicians to conduct surveys for Spotted Owls on the Humboldt-Toiyabe, Stanislaus, and Tahoe National Forests. Project dates start early April through mid May and run through mid August. Duties include:

Conduct occupancy surveys on National Forest land; surveys will occur at night and during early mornings.

Hiking in rugged terrain, long drives, and occasional car camping.

Data entry, maintenance of equipment and vehicles, and attending regular meetings.

Possible location-based duties vary by forest (Truckee, CA; Mi-Wuk Village, CA; Camptonville or Grass Valley, CA).

Humboldt-Toiyabe crew may deploy and maintain autonomous recording units (ARUs); Humboldt-Toiyabe crew may also conduct Flammulated Owl occupancy surveys.

Requirements Primary requirements include a love of nature, enthusiasm about the outdoors, patience, observation skills, interpersonal skills, and a desire to learn more about the flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada. A willingness to face the rigors of fieldwork with good humor is essential. Rigors include physically demanding work (long hikes in steep terrain), navigating off-trail, varying weather, mosquitoes, poison oak, occasional bear encounters, and housing that may be rustic or crowded. Prior hiking and outdoors experience are preferred.

Equipment Field technicians are expected to provide their own binoculars, hiking boots, and camping gear for car camping (tent, sleeping bag, raingear, etc.). Because crews may live in remote areas, a personal vehicle is highly desirable but not required for completing work duties.

Compensation These full-time (40 hrs/week) IBP seasonal staff positions pay $18/hr (before payroll taxes) and do not include fringe benefits. Free shared housing will be provided.

How to Apply Please fill out IBP’s job application form. When ranking positions, select one or more of the following IBP job codes:

SPOW-HumboldtToiyable NF-Field Tech (for work on Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest)

SPOW-Stanislaus NF-Field Tech (for work on Stanislaus National Forest)

SPOW-Tahoe NF-Field Tech (for work on Tahoe National Forest)

Your submission should include ranked position preferences, resume, cover letter, and the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of up to three references. Professional references are preferred, but one reference may be a character reference. References are often slow to reply, so submitting more references ensures quicker processing.

Equal Opportunity IBP is an Equal Opportunity Employer. IBP complies with federal and state disability laws and makes reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities. If you require reasonable accommodations for completing an application or participating in the application process, please call 707-789-3224 or email contact@ibp.org for assistance.
