Position Summary The Veterinary Medical Center at MSU is a state‑of‑the‑art emergency and specialty teaching hospital. The VMC offers 24/7 emergency and critical care services for small and large animals, integrating advanced technology with cutting‑edge research to deliver outstanding patient care. We are seeking a Veterinary Nurse Supervisor to lead our Small Animal Emergency and ICU team, playing a critical role in high‑quality patient care while supporting the hospital’s service, teaching, and research missions.
Key Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care (≈75% of shift), performing all duties expected of Veterinary Nurse I and II roles.
Coordinate day‑to‑day operations of the Emergency and ICU departments.
Supervise, hire, and train assigned nursing staff.
Create and maintain staff schedules; approve time‑off requests.
Ensure adequate staffing levels to support patient care needs.
Oversee performance management, including evaluations and corrective actions.
Facilitate effective communication regarding patient and client care.
Resolve performance, workflow, and operational concerns.
Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Work Schedule Primary shift is third shift. Flexibility to work weekends and day shifts as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired in the first 2–3 years of college or technical/vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology.
Three to five years of progressively responsible patient‑care experience in surgery, drug dosing, sterilization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Three to five years as an Emergency and/or Critical Care Licensed Veterinary Technician, preferably in a teaching hospital setting.
Demonstrated emotional intelligence in a high‑stress work environment.
Prior supervision experience preferred.
