Working/Functional Title: ECCM Supervisor – 2nd shift

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) at Michigan State University (MSU) is a dynamic, state‑of‑the‑art emergency and specialty teaching hospital located on MSU’s beautiful campus. The VMC offers 24/7 emergency and critical care services and board‑certified specialty care for both small and large animals, integrating the latest technology with cutting‑edge research to provide outstanding patient care. We are seeking a Veterinary Nurse Supervisor to join our Small Animal Emergency and ICU team. This individual will play a critical role in delivering high‑quality patient care while supporting the hospital’s service, teaching, and research missions.

Key Responsibilities

Provide direct patient care (approximately 75% of the time), performing all duties expected of Veterinary Nurse I and II roles.

Coordinate the day‑to‑day operations of the Emergency and ICU departments.

Supervise, hire, and train assigned nursing staff.

Create and maintain staff schedules; approve time off requests.

Ensure adequate staffing levels to support patient care needs.

Oversee performance management processes, including evaluations and corrective actions.

Facilitate effective communication related to patient and client care.

Resolve performance, workflow, and operational concerns.

Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Work Schedule Primary shift is second shift. Flexibility to work weekends, day and night shifts as needed.

Minimum Requirements Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in patient care, surgery, drug dosing and sterilization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year of date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Three to five years as an Emergency and/or Critical Care Licensed Veterinary Technician preferably within a hospital teaching setting.

Demonstrated level of emotional intelligence in a high stress work environment.

Prior supervision preferred.

Lifting and carrying animals or equipment up to 50 lbs individually or 150 lbs as a team.

TB risk or potential exposure to animal or specimens with Mycobacterium bovis.

Wear a respirator (does not include paper dust mask worn for comfort).
