Under general supervision, perform skilled repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, gasoline and diesel equipment, and Fire and Police Department vehicles, including diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, efficient, and fully operational. Maintain motor vehicles and gasoline/diesel-powered construction and maintenance equipment. Report problems to the Supervisor. Perform preventive maintenance programs for vehicles and equipment, including specialized Fire and Police Department vehicles. Diagnose problems, analyze solutions, and recommend repair or replacement in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Overhaul internal combustion engines and equipment components; adjust and relines brakes; maintain hydraulic and electrical systems. Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on Fire Department vehicles and pumping equipment to comply with FAA regulations. Repair power mowers, tractors, sweepers, forklifts, backhoes, air compressors, generators, pumps, and related machinery and small equipment. Estimate hours, prices, and materials; requisition tools, materials, and supplies through the purchase order system. Perform emergency repairs on all types of equipment; road test vehicles and conduct road calls as required. Maintain records of repairs and preventive maintenance; run vehicles/equipment idle weekly and perform maintenance if necessary. Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED; two years’ experience as an automotive mechanic; trade school courses in automotive mechanics (preferred); completion of a Fire Department equipment maintenance and repair course (preferred). Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Florida driver’s license or obtain within 90 days; Master Automobile Technician Certification (preferred). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of repair, overhaul, and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment; diesel and gasoline engine operation; hydraulics and electrical systems; welding (preferred); ability to read schematics; diagnose and apply corrective actions; lift up to 50 pounds; read and interpret instructions; communicate effectively; train and supervise subordinates. Hands-on work, primarily in a covered shop with some field work; able to perform strenuous physical tasks; able to lift up to 50 pounds; capable of working under FAA standards for Fire/Police equipment; able to work in varying environmental conditions. Benefits and Schedule
