Work You Will Do Automotive Equipment Mechanic II/ District Five / District Maintenance / Brevard Maintenance

This position will support the agency’s mission by performing skilled work as an automotive equipment mechanic, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and performing routine maintenance on gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment, submit requests for parts and supplies, comply with waste generation requirements, respond to emergency road service calls, provide cleanup, perform minor welding, paint and body repairs, and instruct or assist other mechanics.

Responsibilities

Diagnose, repair, overhaul, and replace engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical and hydraulic systems in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and related equipment.

Field test vehicles and equipment to confirm successful repairs.

Repair, change, and balance tires on automotive and heavy equipment.

Supervise Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.

Perform preventative maintenance to keep equipment operating properly.

Comply with waste generation, storage, and disposal laws and regulations.

Assist with documentation of waste generation and disposal activities.

Submit requests for parts and supplies; track time charged; complete shop work orders.

Operate P‑card holder, process invoices, and complete required paperwork and work orders.

Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor vehicle and equipment repairs.

Clean up after repairs and return tools to proper location.

Perform minor welding, paint, and body repairs as needed.

Instruct other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent plus two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance (three years’ experience can substitute for the diploma).

Valid Class E driver’s license; obtain Class B CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and Class B CDL with air brakes within 10 months.

Knowledge of repairs and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines, and heavy equipment; use of repair manuals, purchasing rules, and waste regulations.

Skills: use of hand tools, mechanical equipment; replace, repair, and install components and accessories; document work performed; perform preventive maintenance.

Abilities: operate motor vehicles; troubleshoot automotive/equipment problems; perform gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance; assist in body/fender repair; lift 50 pounds and perform other physical tasks; use safety equipment; communicate effectively; work independently; perform minor welding; operate and perform inspections on commercial motor vehicles.

Availability to work non‑standard and extended hours during emergencies and natural disasters.

Salary $46,990.52 – $60,811.26 per annum
