Position Title
Mechatronics Engineer – UAV Systems
Employment Type Full-Time, On-site
Overview We are seeking a highly motivated
Mechatronics Engineer
to join our team in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This role is central to the
design, development, and transition to manufacturing
of advanced
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs/drones)
serving both commercial and military markets.
The successful candidate will integrate expertise in
mechanical systems, electronics, and avionics
to deliver robust, scalable, and manufacturable UAV solutions aligned with a
modular systems approach
and
DFMA
principles.
This position will support a U.S. Department of Defense related program and will require proof of U.S. Citizenship to be eligible for employment.
Key Responsibilities Design & Development
Lead the design and integration of electromechanical and avionics subsystems, including actuators, servos, propulsion systems, sensors, and control interfaces.
Collaborate on system-level architectures combining airframe, propulsion, and avionics to ensure reliability, manufacturability, and maintainability.
Perform modeling, simulation, and rapid prototyping of mechatronic and avionics systems to validate performance during prototyping, LRIP (Low-Rate Initial Production).
Develop system wiring architectures, harness routing, and integration plans between the flight computer, ESCs, payload systems, and telemetry modules.
Design and integrate UAV avionics subsystems including flight controllers, ESCs, power distribution, navigation sensors (IMU, GPS), and communication links.
Support software and hardware-in-the-loop testing of flight control and telemetry systems.
Verify electrical and data interface compatibility across payloads and airframes.
Collaborate with avionics and software engineers to troubleshoot flight hardware integration and ensure stable flight performance.
Transition to Manufacturing
Generate and maintain
Technical Data Packages (TDPs) , design documentation, wiring diagrams, and assembly instructions.
Work closely with manufacturing engineers to ensure seamless transition from prototype to production (LRIP → FRP).
Support automation concepts for assembly, test, and sustainment.
Testing & Validation
Develop and execute verification and validation protocols for electromechanical and avionics subsystems.
Participate in lab, bench, and field testing to qualify UAV systems for both commercial and defense applications.
Ensure compliance with FAA and DoD safety and airworthiness requirements.
Work cross-functionally with aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion, and manufacturing teams.
Engage directly with suppliers for component qualification and sourcing.
Contribute to design reviews, risk assessments, and Configuration Control Board (CCB) activities.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
3+ years of experience in mechatronic or electromechanical system design, integration, and testing.
Strong proficiency in CAD and control system tools.
Demonstrated experience transitioning designs from prototype into manufacturable products.
Familiarity with DFMA for electromechanical and avionics systems.
U.S. Citizenship (required for defense project eligibility).
Preferred
Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, or Systems Engineering.
Experience with UAV/drone platforms (Group 2–3 preferred).
Experience with avionics integration, including sensors, power systems, or flight control components.
Knowledge of additive manufacturing, composites, and rapid prototyping.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to operate in a
fast‑paced, dual‑use (commercial + defense)
environment.
Clear communication and documentation abilities for technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Team‑oriented with the ability to interface across engineering, supply chain, and operations.
