Nature of Work This position is classified exempt and is available to any applicant who meets the minimum requirements.
Special hiring rates: $42,538.496 – Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) (SPB 2984-1).
Location 601 57th Street, Southeast, Charleston, WV 25304 (Division of Water and Waste Management, Permitting Section/Groundwater/UIC Program).
Responsibilities
Reviewing Groundwater Protection Plans (GPPs) required for individual permits authorized under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
Review GPPs for industrial facilities that operate under general permits authorized by NPDES.
Review GPPs associated with Class D Solid Waste Facilities.
Report the results of GPP reviews to the appropriate permit writers and/or managers.
Communicate with applicants on GPP requirements and corrections needed for complete plans.
Assist in the development, testing, and training for an online permitting system and follow the standard protocols for the system.
Travel to sites for field inspections, including sites with GPPs, sensitive receptors, groundwater remediation activities, groundwater protection activities, or permitted injection points.
Research, collect, and document groundwater characterization parameters, remediation activities/sites, and UIC Class 5 injection points for mapping activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional Expectations
Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.
Qualifying applicants will be required to complete an internet-based profile assessment.
The candidate will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) search prior to hiring and annually thereafter.
Qualifications
Training: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Geology.
Experience: Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in geology, soil mechanics or related field.
Substitution: Successfully completed graduate study in Geology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the experience requirement.
Certification - Areas of Assignment: Must have completed six semester hours or one year of professional geologic experience in the area of specialization to be eligible.
Specialized Areas: (1) Coal Geology; (2) Environmental Geology; (3) Hydrology, Water Resources Geology, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Geology; (4) Petroleum Geology; (5) Land Reclamation and Soil Geology; (6) Structural Geology.
Other Information Preference to those with degrees or experience in geological modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), karst environments, and/or hydrogeology.
