Field Engineer - Construction Materials Hutchinson, KS | Full-Time | $70,000-$80,000 (DOE)

What You'll Do As our
Quality Control Supervisor , you’ll lead the daily operations of our Quality Control Lab and field-testing efforts. You’ll manage a team of lab technicians and ensure that our materials meet all required specs for safety, performance, and compliance. Your work will directly influence construction quality across roads, bridges, and other key infrastructure projects.
Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:
Supervising daily lab activities, including technician training and equipment/supply requisition
Overseeing and conducting lab testing on asphalt, concrete, and aggregates:
Aggregates : Gradation, Plasticity Index, LA Abrasion, Durability, etc.
Asphalt : Rice Specific Gravity, Hveem, Marshall, Extraction, Densities
Concrete : Slump, Durability, Retained Strength, Specific Gravity
Designing and submitting mix designs for asphalt, concrete, and aggregates
Performing field testing including core sampling, density testing (nuclear gauge), and more
Handling all material certifications for internal and external clients
Acting as the main contact for DOTs, city/county agencies, and independent labs
Advising supervisors on test results and alerting them to deficiencies
Providing technical data and product information to sales and clients
Maintaining accurate documentation of results, reports, and communication
What You Bring to the Table
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (4+ years in Quality Control)
Solid understanding of construction material testing standards (ASTM, AASHTO, etc.)
Ability to lead a team and manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
Comfortable using lab equipment, nuclear gauges, and working in both lab and field settings
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to various job sites
Bonus Skills (Not Required but Preferred)
Familiarity with DOT specifications and material certification processes
Prior experience submitting mix designs or test results for government contracts
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Hands‑on in the lab and outdoors on active job sites
Lifting up to 70 lbs, bending, climbing, and working with hand tools
Exposure to heat, cold, dust, fumes, and live traffic
Required PPE includes hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toed boots, gloves, eye and hearing protection
