Job Description
Heavy Equipment Technician (Yellow Iron) reports to the Maintenance Supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Technician is personally responsible for performing complex preventative maintenance tasks, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide variety of operational equipment (trucks and yellow iron).
Salary $35–$50 per hour, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
Perform complex preventive maintenance tasks on heavy equipment, including bulldozers, skid steers, front‑end loaders, yard trucks, tractors, forklifts, and company vehicles.
Diagnose and repair differentials, hydraulic systems, motors, transmissions, drives, air‑conditioning systems, and electrical systems.
Carry out tasks per preventive maintenance checklist.
Complete records such as work orders, card files, P.M. checklists, and oil samples.
Service and maintain additional equipment such as light plants, water pumps, welders, and other equipment.
Maintain advanced knowledge to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment (yellow iron machinery, tractor trailers, forklifts, and other diesel trucks).
Perform repairs and assigned preventive maintenance services.
Estimate time and material cost on vehicle repairs and requisition new parts.
Conduct safety checks on vehicles.
Complete required paperwork utilizing fleet maintenance software, documenting part usage, and accounting for repair time.
Review, complete, or assign repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with company safety protocols and OSHA standards.
Assist senior technicians in the completion of project work.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old and legally eligible to work in the United States.
A valid driver’s license is required; CDL is a plus.
At least five years of experience in similar job duties.
Sanitation or construction industry experience is a plus.
Computer diagnostic experience as a diesel technician is a plus.
Experience with troubleshooting/repairing DPF systems diagnostic software such as Premium Tech Tool (Mack), Allison transmission, Cummins, CAT, Peterbilt, and Paccar.
Working knowledge of applicable DOT and OSHA standards and regulations.
Must be able to speak and read English well enough to converse with colleagues, drivers, and dispatch, and to make legible entries on reports and records.
Must lift 50 lbs and meet the physical and safety requirements of the position.
Must be able to provide own tools.
