Following a pre-established schedule, perform preventive maintenance, testing and adjustment of electronic and related electro-mechanical systems found on transit vehicles, including propulsion, train control, brake control, air conditioning, annunciation, communications, door control, lighting, and auxiliary electrical supply. Troubleshoot and perform primary maintenance on these systems, removing and replacing components as required to enable vehicles to be returned to revenue service. Respond to and assess transit vehicle operating problems in the field. Perform field repairs on vehicles and provide technical information to central operations and maintenance control staff regarding equipment status and safety. Perform major repair of vehicles involved in accidents and implement modifications to revenue vehicle electronic and electro-mechanical systems as directed by engineering and supervisory staff. Suggest improvements and collaborate with engineering and maintenance staff on modifications. Use diagnostic test equipment and precision measuring devices; fabricate testing equipment as needed for new components and systems. Document work performed and parts used; follow safety procedures and read and interpret diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals, schematics and work orders. Minimum Qualifications
Education Associate in Science degree in electronics from an accredited community college or an Electronics Credential from an accredited electronics certificate program, or equivalent (e.g., completion of a military electronics training program). Substitution Four (4) years of verifiable full-time work experience in electronic maintenance can substitute for the education. Other Requirements Must possess adequate color vision and be physically capable of working in confining spaces and lifting up to 70 pounds. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, off-hours shifts and occasional emergency overtime. Must be able to climb ladders to perform railcar maintenance work. Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of basic operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electrical circuitry, and related mechanical mechanisms used in maintenance and repair of electronic and electro-mechanical systems. Use and care of testing equipment and hand tools; troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques. Shop arithmetic and safety practices related to the trade; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, manuals and work orders. Skills
Diagnosing and repairing operational problems in a variety of electronic and electro-mechanical systems. Performing preventive maintenance and modifications to electronic systems; reading and interpreting drawings and orders. Using and maintaining hand and power tools and testing equipment; following oral and written directions.
