Commercial HVAC Technician

is a skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in commercial and industrial buildings — such as offices, hospitals, schools, and factories. Core Responsibilities

Installation:

Set up HVAC systems (rooftop units, chillers, boilers, air handlers, VRF systems, etc.) according to blueprints and specifications.

Maintenance:

Perform routine inspections, clean coils and filters, check refrigerant levels, test electrical components, and calibrate controls.

Diagnostics & Repair:

Troubleshoot and repair system malfunctions — including compressors, motors, thermostats, and control systems.

System Optimization:

Ensure systems run efficiently to reduce energy costs and meet environmental standards.

Documentation:

Maintain service records, logs, and reports for clients and supervisors.

Safety Compliance:

Follow OSHA, EPA, and local building codes (including handling of refrigerants under Section 608 certification).

Skills & Knowledge

Strong understanding of electrical systems, refrigeration cycles, and airflow dynamics.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics.

Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS).

Familiarity with commercial-grade equipment: chillers, cooling towers, VAV systems, RTUs, etc.

Competence in brazing, pipefitting, and ductwork.

Qualifications

HVAC technical school diploma or associate degree.

EPA 608 Certification

(required for refrigerant handling).

NATE ,

HVAC Excellence , or manufacturer-specific certifications are a plus.

Typically

3–5 years of field experience

for full commercial-level competency.
