Summary: The Alternative Education Program Paraprofessional assists in creating a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. The paraprofessional will also support alternative school students in CTE exploration through Area Career Center courses. To accomplish these tasks, the paraprofessional works closely with the staff and administration of School City of Hammond Schools. Description
Summary: The Alternative Education Program Paraprofessional assists in creating a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. The paraprofessional will also support alternative school students in CTE exploration through Area Career Center courses. To accomplish these tasks, the paraprofessional works closely with the staff and administration of School City of Hammond Schools.
General Responsibilities
Observe, record, and report student behavior. Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback. Support high expectations for student achievement and behavior. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others. Escort/transport students to and from various school areas. Assist in record keeping. Take attendance and record absences. Help prepare instructional and performance materials for use. Use appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate.
Immediately report accidents, assaults, destruction of property, and abusive behavior to instructor or administration.
Distribute the assignment sheets received from the student’s teachers. Administer tests and comply with special instructions regarding assignments from teachers. Collect and return to the teachers any assigned schoolwork done by the students. Document student behavior and activity throughout the student’s stay in the alternative room. Escort students to and from the restroom and the drinking fountain and supervise, from the hallway, the students while they are at the drinking fountain and in the restroom during designated breaks. Escort students to and from commons for lunch at the designated time and supervise them while in the commons. Guide students and supervise them when they are in CTE programs. Execute the usual custodial duties of attendance and the reading of the bulletin. Carry out any special instructions related to the students and the alternative room as indicated by the administrator in charge. Adhere to all district health and safety policies. Other duties as assigned by the assistant principal, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.

Relate well to students and enjoy working with them in an educational setting Maintain and respect confidentially Use acceptable verbal and written communication skills Understand and follow directions accurately Be neat in appearance Have good moral character and responsible behavior Exhibit a positive attitude toward work and school Demonstrate patience and sensitivity to children and adults of all races, backgrounds, and degrees of ability Be punctual and have good attendance Demonstrate a positive attitude toward using technology in the educational setting Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Supervise the students assigned to the alternative room. Enforce the rules and regulations as approved by the administration regarding the climate, expectations, and atmosphere of the alternative room. Serve as a liaison between the student and his/her regular classroom teachers regarding assistance in academic problem areas and in the assignment of additional work. React to change productively and handle other tasks assigned. Appropriately organize, maintain, and operate all classroom equipment. Support the value of education. Support the philosophy and mission of the cooperative and school district. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Comply to all district rules and regulations.
Qualifications
Must possess 60 or more college credits or have passed the ParaPro Assessment Experience with Microsoft Office applications – MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint Experience in data entry, filing, and other general clerical skills Experience using computers, and other technology Willingness to participate in training opportunities relevant to position available in the school setting Ability to learn the use of educational resources available Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in the work environment
