This recruitment will be used to fill multiple vacancies in the Fleet Services Department and to establish an eligible list for future vacancies in the same or other assignments.
First review of applications will be Tuesday, February 18, 2025, and weekly thereafter as needed.
Current Incentives (Fleet Services):
Those hired into a vacant Equipment Mechanic II position will receive a $2000 sign-on bonus, paid after successful completion of an Initial Regular Probation (IRP) period. Additionally, all hourly employees working 2nd or 3rd shift within Fleet Services will receive a 2.5% shift incentive premium, applied to their base hourly rate, plus the City of Mesa’s Shift Differential pay.
An Equipment Mechanic II performs skilled maintenance and repair work in various areas:
Fleet Services Assignment: Performs skilled maintenance and repair of heavy-duty equipment, including diesel-powered machinery. Requires technical knowledge and independent judgment to diagnose and repair electrical and hydraulic systems, and perform major repairs on vehicles like heavy construction and refuse equipment. Responsible for related duties as required.
Fire Assignment: Completes apparatus inspections and performs specialized, journey-level maintenance and repair on firefighting apparatus such as ladder trucks, engine trucks, crash trucks, and related equipment. Duties include diagnosing issues, troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical systems, repairing firefighting systems, fabricating parts, and performing preventive maintenance.
Both roles may require shift work, on-call duties, and working during nights, weekends, and holidays. Supervision is provided by a Shop Foreman or Fire Maintenance and Resource Superintendent. Employees must follow safety procedures and may progress to a Senior Equipment Mechanic II after meeting specific criteria.

Minimum Qualifications:
At least five years of experience as a journey-level mechanic, including 6 months to 1 year in heavy-duty equipment maintenance or as a City of Mesa Equipment Mechanic I.
Special Requirements:
Valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License, own hand tools, and rollaway box. Specific certifications required depending on assignment, such as ASE certifications for Fleet Services or EVT certifications for Fire.
Substance abuse testing and, for some roles, DOT drug and alcohol testing are required.
Preferred qualifications include extensive experience with heavy-duty trucks, certifications like ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician, and experience with fire apparatus for Fire roles.
