Overview
Equipment Mechanics perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment in a Department of Transportation repair shop. This is a full-time position with the Department of Transportation in the Pierre region, located in Pierre, SD. Salary is $23.13 - DOE. Pay Grade: GF. Closing Date: 11/11/2025. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment/vehicles (e.g., chassis lubrication, fill windshield washer tank, change oil and oil filter, inspect items). Assemble, set up, and adjust new equipment/vehicles (e.g., fluids, spark plugs, brakes). Transport equipment/vehicles to obtain repairs, parts, and services. Perform repairs on existing equipment/vehicles (e.g., brakes, belts, cooling system, suspension, electrical). Maintain power and hand tools for preventive maintenance and repair; monitor fuel levels, purchase fuel, and program fuel keys; maintain the fuel pump island at the shop. Work indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to extreme weather; exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes; may work at heights. May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather. Schedule
From approximately May 1 to September 30: 10-hour days, 4 days per week (Mon–Thu). From approximately October 1 to April 30: 8-hour days, Mon–Fri. Night and shift work may be required during emergencies. Requirements & Qualifications
Incumbent must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no transmission restrictions within 120 days of hire date to retain employment. Must be willing and able to report to work for inclement weather conditions and highway emergencies; must be able to report to home station within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions from the time of notification. Precise driving record will be reviewed per SDCL 32-12A; applicants outside SD may provide a motor vehicle record from their state of residence. Provide basic personal hand and air tools for simple repairs; tool allowance may be available. Pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow-up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing required. SD DOT will help pay CDL costs. The Ideal Candidate Will Have Experience performing equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair. Knowledge Of Standard automotive principles, tools, and equipment; internal combustion engines, drive trains, hydraulic and electrical systems. Safety precautions for mechanics and preventative maintenance practices. Digital Voltage Ohm Meter (DVOM) knowledge preferred but not required. Skills Operate hand, power, and shop tools. Operate skid steers, front-end loaders, telehandlers, and forklifts. Perform basic mathematical calculations and use standard office equipment and software. Abilities Display ethical conduct; treat customers courteously and respond to needs. Work cooperatively with others and contribute to a positive work climate. Maintain high effort and commitment to tasks; attend to details and complete work accurately. Lift up to 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally without assistance; up to 90+ pounds infrequently with assistance; walk, sit, and stand for extended periods; reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as needed.
