Overview
Akron Children’s Hospital is dedicated to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. The Division of Pediatric Psychology at Akron Children’s Hospital (ACH) is seeking to grow our team with several pediatric psychologist positions. Opportunities to specialize in one or more pediatric subspecialties exist based on candidates’ interest and expertise.
Opportunities by Subspecialty
Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
Join an established multidisciplinary team in the AASM-accredited sleep center. The psychologist will evaluate and treat behavioral sleep concerns including insomnia, nightmare disorders, nighttime fears, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-quality concerns (e.g., treatment adherence for sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome). Embedded within the outpatient Sleep Center, close collaboration with medical and behavioral health team members is encouraged.
Consultation / Liaison.
Inpatient C/L service providing psychological consults and brief intervention for youth on medical floors. The psychologist will join the established inpatient C/L team to expand services for concerns such as pain management, medical trauma, adjustment to serious illness/injury, and adherence to medical recommendations. Curbside teaching of medical residents and education of medical/nursing staff, with an emphasis on trauma-informed care, are key aspects of the role.
Cardiology.
Opportunity to expand an integrated service within the Cardiology Division. The psychologist will provide collaborative care for youth and adults (if interested) with cardiac conditions, across inpatient, outpatient, and multidisciplinary clinic settings. Close collaboration with a large Cardiology team is encouraged, including medical providers, nurses, educators, social work, nutrition, and palliative care.
Oncology.
Embedded within the Oncology division, the psychologist will join a large team and provide services to patients with cancer diagnoses and/or bone marrow transplant. Services span inpatient, outpatient, and multidisciplinary clinics, with collaboration among medical providers, nurses, therapists, social work, child life, chaplaincy, palliative care, expressive therapies, and school liaison/teachers.
Nephrology.
Build an integrated service within the Nephrology Division. The psychologist will collaborate on care for youth with kidney-related conditions (e.g., ESRD, dialysis, post-transplant). Common concerns include medical adherence, adjustment to medical course, pre-transplant evaluations, and quality-of-life improvement.
Feeding Disorders Program.
Join an interdisciplinary Feeding Team with psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, and registered dietitians. Responsibilities include individual and team evaluations and treatment for feeding difficulties (e.g., ARFID, PFD). Opportunities for program development and clinical research are encouraged, including access to a robust research database.
Responsibilities and Opportunities Opportunities for engagement in program development, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research are robust, regardless of area of clinical specialization. Support includes protected time for research, collaboration with the Research Institute for research coordination and statistical support, and funding for travel to conferences. The hospital maintains partnerships with several local universities for clinical research and student mentorship. Research mentorship and peer collaboration resources are available.
