Schedule Full Time

Shift Night – 8:00 pm to 4:30 am

Role Overview Processes specimens for pathologic diagnosis, tissue fixation, processing, preparing and staining slides for microscopic examination by the pathologist.

Responsibilities

Performs analytical activities related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens.

May prepare specimens utilized for research requests.

May transport specimens to/from collection sites and is responsible for shipment of specimens to/from collaborator sites; takes the necessary training to ensure compliance under federal, state and regulatory guidelines.

Ensures special stains are performed on tissues, as needed.

May perform special staining, maintaining solutions and documents quality control.

Follows established procedures to collect and process biological specimens for analysis.

May register, order, and accession pathology specimens into computer systems.

Adheres to safety requirements and appropriately handles and disposes chemicals.

Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

May have technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, coverslipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens performed in department or work area assigned.

May be required to assist pathologist with frozen section preparations.

May be required to utilize automated Histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers’ instructions.

May assist in procedural areas with specimen collection such as Fine Needle Aspirations.

May assist with preparation of Cytology specimens.

May perform Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.

Qualifications

High School Grad or Equiv Required.

Associate in related field in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) OR equivalent education experience. Clinical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR Successful completion of at least a 50‑week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Clinical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or qualified and served as high complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA‑certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. Preferred.

One or more years of Work Experience Preferred.

Ability to prepare tissue specimens to confirm patient diagnoses.

Ability to perform complex histological procedures, record and analyze data, and maintain/repair instruments.

Up‑to‑date knowledge of specimen handling, ranging from accession to specimen storage.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to maintain safety standards and comply with government regulations in laboratory practices.

Up‑to‑date knowledge of contemporary as well as general histology practice.

Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English.

Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) – License Preferred.

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLTASCP) Preferred.
