Overview Medical Assistant 3 (H) Kendall – University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The MA 3 performs multi-skilled tasks to assist medical providers, supports patients' healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner, and adheres to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures under the supervision of a licensed physician. The physician may delegate tasks to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The MA 3 adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, responds to emergencies, and demonstrates professionalism. The MA 3 works within the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami policies and procedures and collaborates with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse or Designee to ensure safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.

Organization and Work Role Functions: Prioritizes and integrates multiple requests; communicates clearly with patients, families, and team members; seeks assistance when needed.

Team and Professional Development: Contributes to unit/clinic programs, meetings, and clinical preceptor activities; supports positive morale and conflict resolution; uses available technology for communication, documentation, and clinical information; pursues ongoing learning and professional development.

Compliance and LEP: Ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations including HIPAA; meets diverse communication needs of patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).

Professional Practice: Performs within clinical scope of practice, adheres to standards and regulations, and incorporates care protocols into daily practice. Provides constructive feedback with empathy and supports growth.

Core Duties and Qualifications

Abides by ethical standards for behavior, therapeutic communication, and patient privacy.

Demonstrates knowledge of basic medical terminology.

Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam rooms and supplies as directed.

Understands medical and surgical asepsis; prepares patients for examinations with basic instructions and information.

Performs routine laboratory tests.

Performs vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and documents in patient records.

Observes and reports changes in patient signs or symptoms.

Administers medications safely as directed by the physician and assists in related patient care activities (e.g., assistance with mobility).

Escorts and transports patients within hospital locations.

Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments following sterile techniques.

Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.

Provides patients with care instructions and information from the provider.

Maintains accurate patient records, manages supplies, and assists with clerical duties.

Adheres to University and unit policies and safeguards university assets.

Note: Designee in charge assigns unit-specific functions; physician reviews and signs off on competencies and evaluations.

Important Note: Medical Assistants 3 (MA 3) working in hospital-based units will not perform any type of medication administration.

Core Qualifications Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Graduate from Medical Assistant educational program or equivalent

Certification and Licensing

Approved MA Certifications:

CMA - Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA)

RMA - Registered Medical Assistant (AMT)

CCMA - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA)

NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA-NCCT)

NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)

Other certificates: Specialty certification relevant to the position; Active American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for healthcare providers; HIV & AIDS Certification (Florida HIV/AIDS CE); Completion of Clinical Preceptor Workshop for Clinical Staff (Non-Nurses).
