Overview
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Animal Care Specialist (Kennels) to support the Animal Care Division. General Description
Performs a variety of animal control and care work in the kennels of the Animal Care and Adoption Division. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
No experience required.
Special Certifications and Licenses
None.
Preferences
Knowledge of general animal care/health principles and practices.
Additional Information
This position is a safety-sensitive position. Candidates selected for employment will be subject to pre-employment verifications to include but not limited to; post-offer physical examination/drug test and clearance of the Department of Children and Families Affidavit of Good Moral Character. The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Responsibilities Feeds and provides clean water for animals to maintain health and general welfare.
Maintains well-being of animals in the shelter; reunites pets and owners, avoids overcrowding, and prevents cross contamination.
Cleans and disinfects dog runs and cat cages, feeds animals, scans and bands animals, laundry duties, disinfects areas and supplies for next day, stocks food, litter, bedding.
Cleans other shelter areas housing or temporary holding animals to ensure proper sanitation.
Interacts with dogs and cats to provide mental and physical enrichment.
Interacts with the public in a positive and customer-centric manner (adoptions, rescues, owner surrenders, returns to owners, lost pets, fosters, volunteers).
Educates the public on Broward County animal ordinances and programs (rabies clinics, adoption events, and special programs).
Communicates the importance of spaying/neutering, benefits of adoption, and conducts outreach at off-site events.
Assist with training volunteers and collaborate with volunteers in a positive manner.
Performs related work as assigned.
Physical Demands
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting between 20 and 50 pounds, and requires dexterity for precise tasks.
Work Environment and Hazards
Exposure to diseases/pathogens, dog and cat allergens, and potentially aggressive animals; periods of mental stress.
