Overview
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Animal Care Specialist (Kennels) to support the Animal Care Division. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements No experience required. Special Certifications and Licenses None. Preferences Knowledge of general animal care/health principles and practices. Additional Information This position is a safety-sensitive position. Candidates selected for employment will be subject to pre-employment verifications to include but not limited to; post-offer physical examination/drug test and clearance of the Department of Children and Families Affidavit of Good Moral Character. Responsibilities Feeds and provides clean water for animals to maintain health and welfare. Maintains well-being of animals in the shelter; reunites pets and owners; avoids overcrowding and cross contamination. Cleans and disinfects dog runs and cat cages; feeds animals; scans and bands animals; laundry duties; disinfects areas and supplies for next day. Cleans other shelter areas housing or holding animals to ensure proper sanitation and reduce disease spread. Interacts with dogs and cats to provide mental and physical enrichment. Interacts with the public in a positive and customer-centric manner (adoptions, rescues, owner surrenders, returns to owners, lost pets, fosters, volunteers). Educates the public on Broward County animal ordinance-related issues and programs (rabies clinics, adoption events, special programs). Communicates the benefits of spaying/neutering and adoption; conducts outreach for off-site events. Assists with training volunteers and works alongside volunteers. Performs related work as assigned. Physical Demands Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting; may exert 20 to 50 pounds of force and requires fine motor skills for tasks requiring precision. Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment) Routine exposure to disease/pathogens, dog and cat allergens, potentially aggressive animals, and periods of mental stress.
