Overview
Athletic Trainer - PD (Per Diem, PRN) position at Summa Health. This role involves identifying, managing, and rehabilitating injuries in high school athletes, with a focus on prevention, 1:1 and group care, rehabilitation program development, and collaboration with school personnel and Summa Health medical teams. Provide care in accordance with Athletic Training Certification and Summa Health policies and procedures. May assist Summa Health Medical Group with special events and additional coverage as needed.
Responsibilities
Identify, manage and rehabilitate injuries to high school athletes.
Use techniques for prevention of injuries; evaluate and manage injuries.
Provide 1:1 and group care preparing athletes for practice and competition.
Prepare rehabilitation programs for injured athletes and develop training programs for injured and non-injured athletes.
Evaluate, assess, and treat musculoskeletal injuries and sports concussions in the school setting, in consultation with and oversight from a physician.
Provide care in accordance with athletic training certification and Summa Health policy, procedures and protocols.
Assist medical staff with required medical documentation, statistics and other administrative paperwork; maintain medical records for each athlete.
Work as a liaison with school personnel, Summa Health Leadership, and Summa Health medical team; collaborate with school administration and athletic coaches.
May assist Summa Health Medical Group with special events and additional coverage as needed.
Qualifications Formal Education Required
Bachelor’s Degree in athletic training or closely related field
Current license issued by the Ohio OTPTAT Training Board to practice Athletic Training in the State of Ohio
Certified by the Board of Certification, Inc. for athletic trainers
Maintains AT license in good standing
CPR through the American Heart Association for the Healthcare Provider (BLS)
Experience & Training Required
Past experience in a sports medicine and/or orthopedic physician practice preferred
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, patients, parents, administrators, school personnel, other hospital/medical staff and external publics
Competent in computers as it relates to Microsoft Office, electronic medical records, etc.
Ability to make effective presentations in front of groups
Ability to travel from location to location throughout the workday
Must be willing to work with persons with disabilities
Independent, requiring minimal direction or requests to assist while also seeking out opportunities to advance patient care
Motivated, self-starter – always looking to be productive and helpful; always looking for avenues to expand the role of the athletic trainer to better serve the patient
Critical thinking and problem solving skills
Flexible to respond to change in environment, schedule, patient type, processes
Demonstrates flexibility/adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and demands placed on our service
Must be willing and able to acquire additional training/certifications (e.g., casting/bracing, ergonomics) to improve operations
Population Specific Competency: ability to interact with diverse patient populations with respect and dignity
Physical demands: heavy exertion, manual dexterity, ability to stand/walk for extended periods, and ability to drive to other locations
