The Occupational Health and Safety Department of Environmental Health and Safety Department provides services to the extended campus community. This group facilitates occupational health and safety programs, including medical surveillance, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, review assessment, and control of chemical and physical hazards which may affect the health of campus occupants.

Essential Job Duties Are you passionate about creating safer, healthier workplaces? Join our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team as an

Industrial Hygiene Consultant , where you'll play a key leadership role in shaping and advancing our Occupational Health programs.

What You’ll DO

Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive industrial hygiene programs, policies, and procedures that align with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Conduct detailed worksite evaluations to identify and control potential health hazards such as chemical exposure, noise, vibration, and other environmental risks that faculty, staff, and students may encounter.

Mentor team members and take the lead on key IH activities, including air and noise monitoring, exposure assessments, occupational medical surveillance, and the management of hazardous building materials (asbestos, lead, silica, formaldehyde, etc.).

Analyze and interpret sampling and monitoring data, preparing professional reports that clearly communicate findings and recommend effective corrective actions.

Collaboration & Leadership You’ll work closely with a variety of campus partners—including Academic Departments, Facilities Services, Campus Health, Housing, and Campus Enterprises—to address and resolve industrial hygiene and occupational health concerns. You’ll also:

Lead or assist in investigations of occupational illnesses, injuries, and exposures, identifying root causes and recommending preventive solutions.

Provide expert guidance on engineering and administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce or eliminate workplace hazards.

Serve as a key liaison with third‑party IH service providers, contractors, laboratories, and regulatory agencies.

Education & Program Development You’ll help foster a culture of safety through training and education on topics such as:

Hazard communication

Respiratory protection

Hearing conservation

Medical surveillance

Ergonomics

You will also stay current on evolving regulations and standards (OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, AIHA/ACGIH, etc.), recommending updates to ensure our programs remain cutting‑edge and compliant.

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or Master's Degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

Demonstrate ability to build new programs based on firm understanding of safety and health regulations.

Experienced in managing a comprehensive occupational health group. Has in depth experience of exposure prevention and assessment techniques, as well as, indoor air quality and apply this knowledge in a research environment to a variety of safety and health programs.

Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Able to review technical information and processes, identify root cause problems or areas needing improvement and formulate effective and efficient solutions for the research community.

Able to analyze multiple programs, identify areas needing improvements, and prioritize needs for effective short and long term strategic planning for his/her department.

Proficiency in the use of Google Suites and databases.

Strong organizational and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in biological sciences, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science plus 5 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene or biological safety.

Professional certification – Certified Industrial Hygienist desirable.

Experience in research environments and with animal research is preferred.

Familiarization with CDC and NIH guidelines is a plus.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Valid Driver's license required.

Valid NC Driver's license within 60 days of hire.
