Overview
The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant (CSTFA) may function as a first or second assistant as directed according to hospital policy. In addition to intraoperative duties, the CSTFA also performs preoperative and post-operative duties to better facilitate patient care. The CSTFA performs these functions during the procedure under the direction and supervision of the surgeon/physician and in accordance with hospital policy, appropriate laws and regulations. As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. When not actively assisting the surgeon/physician, may assist in rendering patient care at the direction of the Surgical Assistance Manager which may include hospital zone based patient care procedures.

Qualifications
American Heart Association CPR Certification
CSFA, CSA or SA-C conferred by ABSA, NBSTSA or NSSA
3-5 years as Certified Surgical Tech
Weekend rotation on call
