Job Overview WVU Hospitals — Ruby Memorial Hospital is seeking a Histotechnologist (role ID 24027). The position performs and analyzes clinical laboratory procedures associated with specimen preparation for microscopic analysis to support patient care.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Perform assigned laboratory procedures including specimen accessioning, processing, inventory, ordering, embedding, tissue cutting and staining, frozen section production, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.

Prepare tissue and produce microscopic slides using fixation, embedding, sectioning and standard staining to generate accurate reproducible results for physicians.

Operate laboratory equipment (cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, knife sharpeners, slide stainers, embedding centers, distillation system, pH meters, special stain units, IHC instrumentation) per manufacturer instructions and SOP.

Execute quality assurance, quality control, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration and quality control on instruments.

Record all work (blocks cut, special stains, slides, immunoperoxidase slides, frozen section slides, immunofluorescent slides, re-cut slides, autopsy and surgical slides, decals, conference, teaching and research).

Maintain effective communication with laboratory sections, hospital departments and public to disseminate information and resolve problems.

Participate in education of medical students, residents, PA students, MLS and histotechnology students & technicians.

Recognize errors and provide troubleshooting and problem resolution, input for quality assurance and control procedures.

Participate in planning and implementing change, improving productivity through meetings, projects and supervisor discussions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Histotechnology or related field.

One (1) year laboratory experience in histopathology.

Preferred Qualifications

Histotechnologist Certification (HTL) with ASCP.

Qualification in Immunohistochemistry (QIHC) certification through ASCP.

Physical Requirements

Stand and/or sit for long periods.

Visual acuity must not be impaired; color differentiation required.

Manual dexterity for instrument operation including microscope.

Working Environment

Noise and unpleasant odors.

Must wear protective apparel while operating instrumentation.

Exposure to virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens.

Skills and Abilities

Computer skills: keyboard, monitor, mouse.

Excellent verbal, written and electronic communication with healthcare personnel, families, and patients.

Proficient use of laboratory equipment.

Follow complex procedures with minimal guidance.

Additional Job Description The successful applicant will work in Ruby’s Histology laboratory within the Health Science Center under the supervision of the Histology Supervisor and Anatomic Pathology Manager. The role includes rotating duties and flexibility to work one of two shifts, Monday through Friday: 5:00 AM–1:30 PM or 7:30 AM–4:00 PM. Candidates must adhere to departmental policies, SOPs, possess general histology knowledge, and demonstrate strong troubleshooting, multitasking and attention to detail.
